People Helping People is at the core of the credit union movement. In times of uncertainty and despair, credit unions are always there to uplift their communities and support their members. Given the devastating events that have unfolded in California, credit unions across the country are joining together to help their colleagues impacted by the wildfires in Los Angeles County.
The National Credit Union Foundation is currently collecting donations to help credit union employees and volunteers get back on their feet. If you are interested in helping, please consider making an online donation at: https://fundraise.givesmart.com/form/Fd7uxw?vid=1h4phn.
One person impacted by the fires is longtime credit union advocate Antonio Neves. He and his family lost their home and all their belongings. Neves left a meaningful impression on many Maine credit unions after his keynote presentation at last year’s annual Convention. To offer your support to the Neves’ family, you can consider purchasing copies of his books. He recently shared in his newsletter that purchasing a book is a practical and simple way to assist during these extenuating circumstances.
Credit unions also are encouraged to remind their members about the importance of “careful giving.” Moments like these can attract scammers who prey on people’s goodwill to assist families and organizations in California. Paying it forward in times of need can make a real difference, but it’s critical for members to ensure that their contributions are going to legitimate and trustworthy organizations before donating.
