October is Fraud Awareness Month in Somerset County, and local credit unions can get involved! The Somerset Economic Development Corporation (SEDC)—in collaboration with AARP and Somerset County’s law enforcement—is hosting multiple free forums throughout the month to help their communities fight fraud. Awareness events will take place at law enforcement agencies in Fairfield, Skowhegan, Pittsfield, and Madison. Whether your credit union would like to attend an event or simply promote them in your branches, there are a handful of ways you can show your support.
These free one-hour workshops will feature a 45-minute presentation on various scams, including romance; home improvement; and impersonations of family, financial institutions, and businesses. Additionally, they will cover how to identify threats via text, phone calls, emails, social media, and internet websites. Following the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a 15-minute Q&A session with their local law enforcement, AARP, and the SEDC staff.

Interested attendees are invited to join any event regardless of which town they reside in.
The SEDC has also provided a social media graphic, a poster, and an article they wrote for the Somerset Express that can help with spreading awareness of these events—encouraging your community to attend.
