Scammers are always looking for ways to steal money and have been using fake checks to victimize consumers and financial institutions. Fake checks are increasingly hard to recognize because they look legitimate.
Earlier this week, Northeast Credit Union (CU), shared an important alert concerning fraudulent cashier’s checks. These checks are being circulated via mail and contain what looks like Northeast CU’s logo.
Fraud is constantly evolving, but resources are available to help you identify the signs. The Federal Trade Commission created a Fake Checks resource page on its website. There also are a number of resources for reporting suspected fraud to law enforcement. Visit the Justice Department’s StopFraud.gov website for a list of federal agencies to report financial fraud to or file a complaint.
