Declaration of Independence Tour Coming to Communities Across Maine

The Maine Historical Society is planning a statewide tour of its rare copy of the Declaration of Independence this summer and fall, with stops in all 16 counties.

From July through October, the tour will bring one of only 26 surviving Dunlap Broadsides to local communities for public viewing, along with civic events organized in partnership with local organizations. Each stop will span two days and may include readings, student visits, and community-led programming.

The tour is part of a broader statewide initiative, Revolutionary Maine: America at 250, which aims to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary by encouraging reflection on shared values, civic responsibility, and Maine’s role in the country’s founding.

Local host committees will help shape events in each county, offering opportunities for community participation and leadership. For credit unions interested in getting involved, options may include supporting local events, participating in host committees, or engaging members around the tour’s themes.

Additional details, including sponsorship and participation information, are available through the Maine Historical Society.
