To help cover some of the costs associated with delivering meals to students during the summer, our hunger-relief partner, Full Plates Full Potential, provides grants to schools and community organizations to support food service programs across Maine. Due to the ongoing pandemic, many summer programs are in need of significant financial assistance. To assist Full Plates in meeting the increased demand, several credit unions and credit union chapters are helping fulfill grant requests. Grant beneficiaries include:
- Bangor Public Schools
- Bath Area YMCA
- Biddeford Public Schools
- Camp Mechuwana (Winthrop)
- Lisbon Public Schools
- Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program
- RSU 23 (Old Orchard Beach)
- RSU 25 (Bucksport)
- RSU 44/MSAD 44 (Bethel)
- RSU 56 (Dixfield)
- RSU 57/MSAD 57 (Waterboro)
- Scarborough Public Schools
- South Portland Public Schools
- Westbrook Public Schools
“Food insecurity is often at its worst during summer break, when many students and families struggle to find consistent access to nutritious food,” said Justin Strasburger, Executive Director at Full Plates Full Potential. “Thanks to the generous support of Maine’s credit unions, Full Plates Full Potential was able to fully fund all eligible summer meals grants for the first time in our history! We are so thankful for this wonderful demonstration of corporate citizenship grounded in the very thing that makes credit unions such important members of our communities: a steadfast commitment to putting people and communities first!”
The League would like to thank the following credit unions and chapters for offering their support for summer meal programs:
- The Jeanette G. Morin Chapter of Credit Unions
- The York County Chapter of Credit Unions
- Atlantic FCU
- Bangor FCU
- Evergreen CU
- Oxford FCU
- Saco Valley CU
