CU News & Events – May Edition

This May, credit unions sprang into action to celebrate and uplift their communities. From 5K races and volunteerism to member appreciation events, Maine’s credit unions showed what the People Helping People philosophy is all about. In this edition of “CU News & Events,” our League provides insight into what our credit unions were up to in the month of May.

  • Acadia FCU supported Northern Maine Community Trails with a $50,000 commitment toward preserving and enhancing the resources provided by the Trails to residents in the Presque Isle region. 
  • On May 30, Ancorum CU hosted a Trivia Night to benefit Special Olympics Maine in Bath. 
  • Employees from Atlantic FCU participated in Maine Needs’ Community Walk & Race on May 23, supporting their work to help over 77,000 Mainers annually. 
  • Bangor FCU presented both Loaves and Fishes and the Hancock County Technical Center with a $5,000 donation to help their continued efforts to fight hunger. 
  • May 22 brought Brewer FCU’s Member Appreciation Lunch to both branch locations—which included hot dogs and beverages. 
  • During the month of May, Capital Area FCU held a bottle drive to raise money for Special Olympics Maine. 
  • Casco FCU’s Walk to End Hunger raised over $2,200 in donations. 
  • Central Maine FCU proudly announced Washburn Elementary School as the recipient of their 2026 Books for Kids Summer Reading Grant. 
  • Community CU collected items for the Pet Food & Supply Drive in support of clients of SeniorsPlus. 
  • A fraud session was presented at Spectrum Generations by Connected CU, who shared practical tips to stay protected from phone, text, email, and online scams. 
  • A group from cPort CU joined the American Heart Association’s Maine Heart Walk. 
  • Karen and Deb from Cumberland County FCU volunteered at the Bath YMCA/Special Olympics Maine meal packing event—contributing to over 10,000 meals packed in just two hours. 
  • Food brings people together, and to celebrate 70 years of service to their members, Dirigo FCU began assembling a community cookbook filled with recipe submissions. 
  • Joe, Kaileigh, Jana, and Alex from Downeast CU hit the greens at the 2nd Annual Calais Blue Devils Boosters Golf Tournament, which raised over $13,000 for Boosters activities. 
  • May 8 held Eastmill FCU’s Annual Meeting. 
  • Empeople CU, alongside the rest of the Bangor Chapter of Credit Unions (Acadia FCU, Bangor FCU, Brewer FCU, Maine Savings FCU, Seaboard FCU, and University CU) put on another successful CU4Kids Colors 4 a Cause 5K on May 17. 
  • Despite the rain, more than 20 Evergreen CU employees gathered to run the annual Miles for Mills 5K to benefit the Travis Mills Foundation—exceeding their personal $1,500 fundraising goal. 
  • Franklin-Somerset FCU coordinated a “Broke Folk” raffle to benefit Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger, with gas cards, Hannaford gift cards, and a summer fun/staycation basket as the prizes.
  • Members could safely dispose of personal documents at Gardiner FCU on May 14 and 15 during their shredding event. 
  • Great Falls FCU continued their Fraud Friday posts on social media, warning members about scams involving online marketplaces, account takeovers, free trials and offers, and more. 
  • HRCU enjoyed a Staff Appreciation Day at the New England Sports Hub in Somersworth. 
  • Katahdin FCU staff participated in the annual Career Day at Stearns High School. Six area high schools participated in the event. 
  • In exchange for a voluntary donation to the Campaign for Ending Hunger and/or Special Olympics, KSW FCU raffled off a pair of tickets to a Jason Aldean concert. 
  • Maddie, Sara, Susan, and Megan from KV FCU had a lovely time at the United Way of Kennebec Valley’s Day of Caring event at Cony High School. 
  • Lighthouse CU attended the Bring Back the Trades Expo in South Portland, where they presented a $2,500 scholarship to Luisa Kiangata. 
  • The Yard/Bake Sale at Lincoln Maine FCU was a big success, raising over $1,200 for their scholarship fund. 
  • Those with a sweet tooth could get their fix at Lisbon Community FCU, who continued selling chocolate candy bars throughout May for the Campaign for Ending Hunger. 
  • On May 19, a team of six staff from Maine Family FCU volunteered their time at Good Shepherd Food Bank. In total, they packed 1,654 pounds of food, equaling 1,378 meals to be distributed to food pantries across Maine. 
  • At the end of May, KJ, Jesse, Karly, and Emilee from Maine Highlands FCU participated in Dexter Regional High School’s Color Fun Run/Walk to benefit the Heart of Maine Resource Center.  
  • Lynn Anderson, Assistant Vice President of Professional Development at Maine Savings FCU, was recognized as the Northern Region 2026 Junior Achievement Student Impact Award winner. Congratulations, Lynn! 
  • Maine Solutions FCU’s website encouraged donations to the Campaign for Ending Hunger, helping provide for Mainers in need. 
  • Alongside Prime Financial, Inc., Maine State CU helped sponsor new exhibits at the Children’s Discovery Museum. 
  • In their 70th year, Midcoast FCU staff came together to assemble 70 “birthday kits” to be donated to local food pantries—complete with everything needed to bake and decorate a cake to help ensure no child goes without a special celebration on their birthday. 
  • New Dimensions FCU was thrilled to share that they were named the Morning Sentinel Readers’ Choice Award winner in the credit union category. Congratulations, New Dimensions!
  • NorState FCU continued their annual tradition of spring cleaning at Mizpah Grand Isle, ensuring the cabins and chapel are ready for summer visitors. 
  • OTIS FCU served as a proud sponsor of the King of the Mountain Snowmobile Hill Climb event at Saddleback Mountain. 
  • With 100 new members in April and a commitment to donate $10 for every new member gained during that month, Oxford FCU donated $1,000 to Sexual Assault Prevention & Response Services. 
  • PeoplesChoice CU was the official presenting sponsor for the Channel 8 Spring Into Hope Fashion Show in support of Sweetser. 
  • To raise important funds for both the Campaign for Ending Hunger and Special Olympics Maine, Sabattus Regional CU held their 19th annual Anne Lachance Sidewalk Sale on May 28 and 29—selling books, games, toys, dishes, decorations, furniture, and more. 
  • Saco Valley CU encouraged members to take their spring cleaning one step further by also reviewing their finances and monthly subscriptions, cancelling anything that is no longer being used to free up money in the budget. 
  • Alongside the Bangor Chapter of Credit Unions, Seaboard FCU presented a $10,000 donation to Northern Light Health’s Children’s Miracle Network. 
  • With the nation’s 250th birthday ahead of us, Sebasticook Valley FCU sold raffle tickets in their branches for a set of patriotic cornhole boards and bags. All ticket proceeds were directed to the Campaign for Ending Hunger. 
  • Supporting veterans and their families, The County FCU donated $2,600 to Witt’s End Wilderness. 
  • In recognition of National Pet Month, Town & Country FCU partnered with the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland by sponsoring the shelter’s Pet Food Pantry and sending 10 employees to volunteer. 
  • Trademark FCU saw a record-breaking year for their Miracles in Motion fundraiser event to help MaineHealth Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital’s efforts, with proceeds reaching $12,132. 
  • During their Member Appreciation Week, TruChoice FCU coordinated celebrations and giveaways to honor members all week. 
  • University CU spent a day volunteering with Special Olympics Maine at Hampden Academy, where they assisted with the softball toss and motorized events. 
  • Winthrop Area FCU team members Kayla and Sara enjoyed special birthday celebrations with their colleagues.
