CU News & Events – June Edition


As the weather heated up in June, credit unions warmed the hearts of their communities, jumping at every opportunity to get involved across the state. From celebrating at festivals to volunteering with local organizations, communities throughout Maine felt credit union love and support. Below, our League offers a look at what some of our credit unions were up to last month. 

  • Acadia FCU was a proud platinum sponsor of the 2024 Maine Moose Lottery event in Fort Kent on Saturday, June 15. They played games, handed out branded swag, and sold both popcorn and 50/50 tickets. By the end of the day, they raised $755.64 for the Campaign for Ending Hunger!
  • On their social media channels, Atlantic FCU posted smart financial moves for empty nesters, highlighting how a child’s graduation also impacts the finances of their guardian(s), who typically have some extra funds once their children have all moved out of the house. Tips included adjusting your budget, reassessing insurance coverage, boosting retirement savings, downsizing your home, and more.
  • Bangor FCU branches collected donations for Special Olympics athletes, inviting members to ”light a torch” in support of the athletes within the credit union’s communities.
  • Brewer FCU gave away tickets to the Night of Laughs at Jeff’s Catering and Event Center in Brewer, courtesy of the Brewer Firefighters Union Local 2162.
  • Capital Area FCU hosted a yard sale to benefit Special Olympics Maine and raised nearly $1,500 to support this important organization!
  • During the month of June, Casco FCU held a peanut butter drive and highlighted that food banks love peanut butter donations since the product is packed with nutrients.
  • Central Maine FCU hosted furry friends for adoption at their credit union! On June 28, the credit union had bunnies and kittens at the branch and covered half of the adoption cost for anyone who came in and wanted to bring a new friend home. They also collected donations for the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society at the same time.
  • Changing Seasons FCU members were welcomed by UCU. With the regulatory and membership approvals in hand, the two organizations are combining. Congratulations!
  • Community CU’s Lewiston location completed an ATM upgrade.
  • Spectrum Generations’ Meals on Wheels program received a donation from Connected CU.
  • cPort CU was named one of Forbes’ Best-In-State Credit Unions for 2024 for the second year in a row! The County FCU, Maine State CU, Evergreen CU, New Dimensions FCU, Town & Country FCU, and Atlantic FCU were also recognized for the state of Maine. Congratulations to all on this accomplishment!”
  • Have you signed up for Cumberland County FCU’s pickleball fundraiser? You’re in luck! The credit union decided to move the tournament from June to September to allow for greater participation. Sign up now and support both your credit union colleagues and the Campaign for Ending Hunger at the same time.
  • To raise awareness about fraud and scams, Dirigo FCU shared on its website the list of companies and banks that scammers are most likely to impersonate.
  • Downeast CU’s Machias location supported Sunrise Opportunities, sponsoring two Olympians as they completed at the 2024 Special Olympics of Maine.
  • Eastmill FCU took to social media on June 6 to commemorate D-Day, and thank those who bravely fought for our country on the 80th anniversary of the invasion.
  • On Saturday, June 15, Empeople CU manned a lemonade stand at the Biddeford Beach Bash.
  • This baseball season, Evergreen CU has committed to donating $10 for every hit (or $25 for every homerun) that the Portland Sea Dogs’ 5th batter gets at home to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland.
  • Ahead of the official start of their Christmas in July Calendar Fundraiser, Five County CU announced that this initiative raised over $6,500! A winner will be pulled each day in July.
  • In honor of Father’s Day, Franklin-Somerset FCU held a bake sale for the Campaign for Ending Hunger and raised over $500.
  • Employees of Gardiner FCU enjoyed a fun-filled spirit week. Themed days included Aloha Day, Hat Day, Favorite Color Day, Alumni Day, and Mismatch Day.
  • On July 25, Great Falls FCU’s 68th Annual Meeting was held virtually.
  • Katahdin FCU awarded $9,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors in the Katahdin area.
  • In their branches, KSW FCU sold Backyard Roasting & Toasting Raffle tickets to benefit the Campaign for Ending Hunger and Special Olympics Maine. One lucky winner took home a firepit stuffed with goodies and a set of chairs.
  • KV FCU announced the recipients of their 2024 scholarships: Diana Estes, Isabelle L’Italien, Kylee Huard, and Lily Belanger. Congratulations to all!
  • Lincoln Maine FCU held a yard and bake sale at its branch on June 7.
  • George Roy, President/CEO of Lisbon Community FCU, partook in a special Passing of the Torch Celebration on June 28, noting his retirement from the credit union and Sarah Perkins’ assumption of the President/CEO role. Congratulations, George, on a well-deserved retirement and best wishes to you in the next chapter!
  • A few groups from Maine Family FCU volunteered time helping at the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society throughout June.
  • Maine Highlands FCU’s summer newsletter outlined what a dormant account is, what happens if your account becomes dormant, and how to keep your account from becoming dormant.
  • Maine Savings FCU participated in the Brewer Riverwalk Festival, engaging with their community and sharing in the festivities.
  • A foursome from Maine State CU supported the Mid-Coast Recreation Center at a golf tournament on June 14.
  • The Brunswick branch of Midcoast FCU held a Sock Drive & Fundraiser for the Brunswick Gathering Place. On the final day of the fundraiser, they also sold brownies and cookies.
  • Milestones FCU highlighted their 2024 scholarship winners on their website: Alyssa Tremblay and Madeleine Albert. Congratulations!
  • New Dimensions FCU’s 10th Annual Cruisin’ for a Cure Car Show was a huge success! This special event benefits the Maine Children’s Cancer Program.
  • The Northeast CU Foundation announced that it recently awarded $40,000 in scholarships to 23 different student members from 16 schools across New Hampshire and Maine.
  • NorState FCU presented donations to local food pantries throughout the month.
  • OTIS FCU made a donation to the Local 14 Union Hall in Jay to assist with renovations to create the new headquarters for the Western Maine Labor Council.
  • On social media, Oxford FCU reminded members of the common payment methods that scammers will request you use, including cryptocurrency, payment apps, and the most used gift card asks.
  • Penobscot County FCU was honored as a Silver Donor to the Heart of Maine by United Way.
  • PeoplesChoice CU connected with their community at the 41st Annual La Kermesse Festival in Biddeford, loving the opportunity to celebrate the community’s culture and demonstrate their commitment to local involvement.
  • To benefit the Campaign for Ending Hunger, Sabattus Regional CU ran their Annual 4th of July Cooler Raffle in their branch. The cooler was filled with a Cantrell’s Seafood gift cart, s’mores fixings, a water balloon kit, a double hammock, glow sticks, sparklers, and two river tubes.
  • Saco Valley CU served as the Champion Sponsor of the Saco Main Street Sidewalk Arts Festival at the end of June.
  • Seaboard FCU hosted a Baking the Difference event at Sweet Cheeks Bakery on Verona Island on June 22. The bakery donated 25% of their proceeds to the Campaign for Ending Hunger when a customer mentioned Seaboard’s initiative.
  • On their website and social media, Sebasticook Valley FCU shared important and helpful tips for recent graduates to better-understand how to manage student loans, build credit, and enter the workforce.
  • The County FCU congratulated Cherie Gendreau on earning her Certified IRA Specialist designation. Way to go, Cherie!
  • Town & Country FCU kicked off the start of summer with two special Member Appreciation Events. The first was at Hadlock Field with a Sea Dogs game and the second was at The Dairy Corner in Scarborough with a special ice cream social for members.
  • Trademark FCU was excited to sponsor the South Portland Youth Triathlon again this year, which took place on June 22.
  • On June 15, TruChoice FCU joined the industry in recognizing World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.
  • University CU announced their first branch location coming to Augusta this summer. They look forward to welcoming and serving members in this new area.
  • Employees at Winthrop Area FCU gathered to celebrate Darlene’s birthday with a delicious cake. We hope you had a great birthday, Darlene!
