CU News & Events – July Edition

With celebrations for the 4th of July, #ILoveMyCreditUnion Day, community festivals, and member appreciation, credit unions throughout Maine showed up for their communities with the People Helping People spirit on full display. Outlined below, our League offers a look at some of the great things Maine’s credit unions accomplished in July. 

  • Acadia FCU launched an exciting new initiative to support Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger—Swipe Out Hunger—asking members to fight food insecurity by swiping their Acadia debit or credit card. 
  • In honor of #ILoveMyCreditUnion Day, Atlantic FCU’s South Sanford location hosted Bites and Banking, providing members with free hot dogs, chips, and cookies as well as great company and conversation. 
  • Bangor FCU invited members to join them in Ellsworth for a hot dog cookout—complete with free Bangor FCU gear—on July 25th to celebrate the credit union movement on #ILoveMyCreditUnion Day. 
  • Brewer FCU encouraged young members to take charge of their financial futures by getting a head start on savings with their Shark Saver youth account. 
  • Capital Area FCU’s Stacey Doucette was promoted to Senior Operations Manager; the credit union noted her energy, commitment, and dedication set her apart and will positively contribute to her new role. Please join us in congratulating Stacey! 
  • On July 21, Mike, Ayden, Jyoti, Patty, and CJ from Casco FCU participated in CU Insurance Solutions’ golf tournament at Falmouth Country Club to benefit Special Olympics Maine. 
  • Central Maine FCU assured members that they will have 24/7 access to their account(s) via online and mobile banking amidst the credit union’s 4th of July holiday closure. 
  • Community CU partnered with The Store Next Door Project, Kaydenz Kitchen Food Pantry, and Community Clinical Services, Inc. to host a Free Hot Dog Dinner in the Park event on July 22. 
  • To help the Maine Children’s Home’s Christmas in July effort, Connected CU dedicated July to collecting newly purchased socks, underwear, and hygiene items at both the Augusta and Winslow branches. 
  • cPort CU employees and their mascot, Earnie, joined the community for the annual Moxie Festival parade. 
  • Cumberland County FCU shared in their summer newsletter that they awarded $11,000 in scholarships to local high school students pursuing continued education, honoring their ongoing commitment to supporting students in their communities given their history as a credit union rooted in teaching. 
  • To kick the school year off right, Dirigo FCU asked members to nominate a Maine teacher who goes above and beyond. The credit union is going to provide five incredible teachers across the state with $500 in classroom supplies from their personal Amazon wish lists. 
  • As a part of ongoing industry efforts to fight fraud, Downeast CU shared a Maine Credit Unions video with members highlighting what to remove from wallets to reduce the chance of identity theft if the wallet is lost or stolen. 
  • A team from Eastmill FCU participated in the East Millinocket Summerfest on July 11, handing out free hot dogs and collecting donations for the Campaign for Ending Hunger. 
  • Empeople CU cautioned members of the potential for fraudulent schemes exploiting the catastrophic flooding in Texas, noting that scammers tend to prey on people’s goodwill and generosity—especially during times of need. 
  • Evergreen CU welcomed five new board members in July! Glen Holmes, Nick McCrillis, Andrew Bourgoin, Florence Williams, and Skyler Redford are all committed to helping the credit union continue to thrive and meet the needs of their members. 
  • The team at Five County CU recognized #ILoveMyCreditUnion Day by rocking their logo wear (for the last time before they rebrand!) and hosting bake sales and cookouts, offering donuts, and raising money for the Campaign for Ending Hunger. 
  • Franklin-Somerset FCU participated in Farmington’s Summerfest last Saturday with a booth of goodies and games. They also began selling canvas totes for the Campaign for Ending Hunger. 
  • Steph, Anna, and Vicki from Gardiner FCU assisted at the Ironman race at the end of the month, handing athletes shirts and backpacks to prepare for the race. Board Member Deb Couture also lent a helping hand on Sunday as Team Captain for the athlete transition area, assisting all 2,400+ participants alongside her team. 
  • Great Falls FCU encouraged members to utilize online banking, their mobile app, and ATMs during their closure over the 4th of July. 
  • Katahdin FCU sponsored Membership Appreciation Days at both offices, with one occurring during the Millinocket 4th of July activities and the other taking place during Island Falls Summerfest. 
  • For the month of July, KSW FCU ran their Summer Fun in the Sun Giveaway, selling tickets in their branches for a chance to win a bundle full of KSW merchandise, summer must-haves, and four combo tickets to Funtown Splashtown USA. All ticket sale proceeds will benefit both the Campaign for Ending Hunger and Special Olympics Maine. 
  • At KV FCU, the team recognized #ILoveMyCreditUnion Day by welcoming members into the branches for a sweet treat and an opportunity to be the lucky winner of a $100 VISA gift card. Members who couldn’t make it into a branch could also leave a comment on Facebook noting why they love KV FCU for entry. 
  • With senior members of the community frequently targeted by scammers, Lighthouse CU shared information on their website and social media outlining how to recognize common tactics and safeguard loved ones for strong financial futures.  
  • Lincoln Maine FCU put on a Totally 90s Kids TV Bash for Loon Fest 2025—complete with ice cream, popcorn, hot dogs, prizes, and even a Slime an Employee contest for the Campaign for Ending Hunger! 
  • Lisbon Community FCU’s Annual Basket Raffle to benefit the Campaign for Ending Hunger is back! With a record-breaking 51 baskets donated by local businesses, community members, and partners, there is truly a basket to suit everyone. The raffle runs through the beginning of September, with baskets on display at both branches. 
  • Maine Family FCU celebrated its three outstanding scholarship winners and their academic achievements, leadership, and dedication to bettering their communities. 
  • Maine Highlands FCU attended the Piscataquis River Festival with a booth. The team even participated in the pie eating contest! 
  • Maine Savings FCU proudly supported the Atkins Memorial Library as the official sponsor of the Children’s Corner, collecting new or like-new hardcover books through August 1 while the library plans to reopen in Corinth. 
  • On their website, Maine Solutions FCU is featuring a membership referral bonus—encouraging members to spread the word about the credit union difference. 
  • Maine State CU started collecting donations for the Backpacks 4 ME program and will continue to do so through August 15. All branches are accepting items, or donations can be made online. 
  • Liza from Midcoast FCU presented a $2,500 donation to Midcoast Youth Center in support of their 8th Annual “Set for Success” event taking place on August 24. The event is aspiring to supply every student in RSU 1, from pre-K through 12th grade, with a new backpack and all teacher-required supplies for the year. 
  • Milestones FCU congratulated their 2025 scholarship winners, who each received $1,500 towards their education: Noah G., Fiona H., Lauren L., Hawa O., and Chloe T. 
  • #ILoveMyCreditUnion Day was recognized by both the Skowhegan and Silver Street New Dimensions FCU branches. A Grill-Out Lunch occurred in Skowhegan while the Silver Street group held a car wash, accepting any donation amount—all in support of Special Olympics Maine and the Campaign for Ending Hunger. 
  • NorState FCU’s Paddle into Summer fundraiser arrived in Fort Kent! For $10 per ticket, members could help feed hungry Mainers and enter to win a kayak. A winner was drawn on July 25. 
  • Chris Bouchard, President/CEO of OTIS FCU, was featured on Lydia’s Lunch Bunch podcast, discussing community involvement and becoming #12 in S&P’s Top 100 Credit Unions in the country. 
  • To benefit their employee charitable fund, Helping Hands, Oxford FCU held a Cool Summer raffle, with two winners drawn on July 31. The winners each took home a custom set of cornhole boards, Koozie camp chairs, a Yeti tumbler, and a cooler bag full of Oxford FCU merchandise. 
  • PeoplesChoice CU’s Win Big, Do Good Summer Sweepstakes continued in July, and they are halfway to their $10,000 fundraising goal for the Campaign for Ending Hunger! One winner has the opportunity to take home up to $2,500. 
  • Sabattus Regional CU also alerted members to be aware of possible scams surrounding the flooding in Texas, warning members to only give to trusted and verified organizations to avoid fraud. 
  • Due to the ongoing presence of fraud, Saco Valley CU shared information with members about social engineering and account takeover attempts targeting online and mobile banking users. 
  • Seaboard FCU returned to the Bucksport Bay Festival with their lemonade stand again this year! In total, more than $871 was raised through their stand for the Campaign for Ending Hunger. 
  • To benefit the Campaign for Ending Hunger, Sebasticook Valley FCU is raffling off tickets for a beautiful hand-carved bench provided by Wayne Curtis Chainsaw Carvings.
  • Ahead of the Maine Potato Blossom Festival in Fort Fairfield, The County FCU held a potato decorating contest and hosted a pre-parade party with a photo booth! 
  • For the 14th consecutive year, Town & Country FCU was a major sponsor and supporter of the Maine Cancer Foundation’s annual Tri for a Cure fundraiser taking place the weekend of July 19-20. In addition to hosting the Survivor’s Breakfast and staff volunteering at the kick-off Expo event, eight employees participated in the triathlon—raising over $7,500. Combined with our sponsorship, Town & Country contributed over $22.5K to the Foundation. 
  • Trademark FCU showed their support for athletes at the South Portland Youth Triathlon. 
  • In their 70th anniversary year, TruChoice FCU is donating $700 each month to a local organization making a positive impact on their community. In July, they proudly contributed to the efforts of Sweetser in Saco. 
  • A group from UCU volunteered their time and skills with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Bangor, helping paint multiple rooms and ceilings. 
  • Winthrop Area FCU let members know of fraudulent texts circulating posing as the Department of the Secretary of State.
