CU News & Events – February Edition

Between annual meetings, community-centered giving, celebrations, and volunteering, Maine’s credit unions were not slowed down by the snowy, cold weather. All month long, credit unions found supportive ways to show their communities the spirit of People Helping People. Below, our League shares an overview of what some of our credit unions were up to this February.

  • On February 21 and 22, Acadia FCU served as a sponsor for the 7th Annual Acadian Pond Hockey Classic, which featured a three-on-three pond hockey tournament. 
  • Ancorum CU flooded their branches with paper hearts that they sold for $1 each to benefit Special Olympics Maine. 
  • Atlantic FCU’s Senior Leadership Team wore matching all-red outfits on National Wear Red Day in support of heart health. 
  • Bangor FCU proudly shared that they once again earned the BankSafe Trained Seal for educating their frontline staff with AARP’s BankSafe training—demonstrating their focus on fraud prevention. 
  • In celebration of the Super Bowl, Brewer FCU asked members online to comment their favorite Super Bowl snack, like the post, and tag someone they planned to watch the game with. Then, the credit union randomly selected one winner to take home a Brewer FCU-branded cooler on wheels. 
  • On February 22, Capital Area FCU hosted their annual Bowl-A-Thon to benefit Special Olympics Maine at Interstate Bowling Center in Hallowell. 
  • Casco FCU launched their Monty Moose Youth Savings program for members aged 12 and under during school vacation week, offering activities and prizes at their branches. 
  • The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society received support from Central Maine FCU, who conducted a month-long drive to make a meaningful impact on their community. 
  • In their winter newsletter, Coast Line CU identified debt solutions to help members obtain financial independence. 
  • Community CU offered a free ski, snowboard, and tubing night to members at Black Mountain of Maine on February 25—complete with a drawing, swag, trivia, and loads of winter fun. 
  • Spectrum Generations’ 28th Annual Ice Fishing Derby saw sponsorship from Connected CU. 
  • On February 9, a group of cPort CU employees spent their morning volunteering at Wayside Food Programs preparing a meal for South Portland Middle School. 
  • Amidst the excitement from the New England Patriots making it to the Super Bowl, Cumberland County FCU employees rallied together to provide donations to Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger—allowing them to wear their favorite team’s gear. 
  • Dirigo FCU opened their scholarship application for this year, noting that they will award 14 individual $1,000 scholarships to help students further their education. 
  • As a result of their staff Dress Down Day, Downeast CU donated $1,082 to the Machias Food Pantry. 
  • Eastmill FCU facilitated a Valentine’s basket raffle at their main office, with a winner drawn on February 13. All proceeds benefited the credit union’s People Helping People fund. 
  • Empeople CU was thrilled to share that they were voted Best Credit Union and Best Customer Service in Maine by Best of the 207. 
  • Evergreen CU provided information about their Evergreen CU Education Foundation scholarship towards college or trade school efforts. 
  • During February, Franklin-Somerset FCU sold candy and hearts that members could write their names on for display on the wall.
  • Hillary and Alicia from Gardiner FCU spent time volunteering at the Special Olympics Winer Games, handing out medals and cheering for athletes. 
  • On social media, Great Falls FCU warned about smishing scams to help protect their members from fraud. 
  • On Valentine’s Day, HRCU shared information about romance scams. 
  • Katahdin FCU sponsored a Valentine’s Day basket raffle to benefit the Campaign for Ending Hunger. 
  • To provide support for Special Olympics Maine and the Campaign for Ending Hunger, KSW FCU collected $5 donations and allowed members to share the love for their Love is in the Lobby fundraiser. 
  • During Random Acts of Kindness Week, KV FCU celebrated their second annual Kindness Challenge, where each staff member was encouraged to do one act of kindness each day of the week.  
  • Lighthouse CU was joined by Johanna Corcoran as their new Executive Director for the Lighthouse CU Foundation. Welcome, Johanna! 
  • To aid in protecting members from fraud, Lincoln Maine FCU took to social media to share five signs that a fraudster is calling. 
  • To make light out of the ample heavy snow, Lisbon Community FCU engaged with members online to spread joy. They asked anyone following their Facebook page to participate in their Winter Storm Challenge by posting a photo using their branded beanie or branded ice scraper and tagging the credit union. One winner received a $25 prize. 
  • With tax season high on the priority list, Maine Family FCU encouraged members to utilize their returns carefully to ensure they stay on track to reach their goals. 
  • On February 25, Maine Highlands FCU hosted a Financial Fitness Fair for homebuyers.  
  • Maine Savings FCU provided a donation to Partners for Peace. 
  • To benefit the Campaign for Ending Hunger, Maine State CU sold delicious crockpot meals and baked goodies in Waterville on February 13. 
  • Tena and Brian from Midcoast FCU presented the Corporal Works of Mercy of St. Mary’s Church with a $2,500 donation for the Fuel for Friends program. 
  • Milestones FCU’s $1,500 scholarship is now open!
  • A bake sale took place at New Dimensions FCU’s Waterville location on February 13, with funds benefiting both Special Olympics Maine and the Campaign for Ending Hunger. 
  • NorState FCU, alongside their Aroostook Chapter of Maine Credit Unions peers (The County FCU, Acadia FCU, and University CU), was amazed with the success of the Chapter’s annual snowmobile ride. Thanks to many generous sponsors and riders, over $10,000 was raised. 
  • Chris and Kassi from OTIS FCU supported Special Olympics athletes at the Maine Winter Games, assisting with the snowshoe event and cheering Olympians on as they competed. 
  • In early February, Oxford FCU asked members online what the coldest temperature they’ve seen so far this winter is. Five winners were randomly selected to win the Cold Weather Combo prize: a branded Carhartt beanie and a package of handwarmers. 
  • On Groundhog Day, PeoplesChoice CU gave away two ice-level, front row tickets to see the Maine Mariners play on February 7. 
  • Sabattus Regional CU began their Pot O’ Gold 50/50 and Basket Raffle, which will conclude on March 20, to help Special Olympics Maine. 
  • Saco Valley CU assisted the Saco Meals Program in the beginning of the month by sponsoring and serving a meal. 
  • A team from Seaboard FCU spent time at the Bucksport Middle School teaching a Junior Achievement financial literacy module. 
  • Given rising costs, Sebasticook Valley FCU put together money-saving tips in anticipation of Valentine’s Day—which was projected to reach a record $29.1 billion in spending this year. 
  • During school vacation week, The County FCU sponsored a giveaway in partnership with BigRock Mountain for two pairs of lift tickets. 
  • On February 12th, a team of Town & Country FCU employees came together and spent the morning volunteering at Maine Needs in Portland helping to fill requests from care providers across the state. In addition, the credit union made a monetary donation to the nonprofit to help purchase supplies that support neighbors in need.  
  • On February 18, Trademark FCU sponsored and assisted with Make-A-Wish Maine’s annual telethon. 
  • TruChoice FCU donated a portion of their interchange income from 2025 to two deserving organizations. Nearly $14,000 went to Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital and over $5,000 was donated to McAuley Residence!
  • Renee and Shelby from University CU volunteered at the Special Olympics Maine Winter Games and loved having the honor of supporting athletes, coaches, instructors, parents, and fellow volunteers. 
  • Winthrop Area FCU warned members about romance and text scams.
