CU News and Events – April Edition


Maine’s credit unions remained a ray of sunshine for their communities throughout the cold April rain! With a multitude of community-based events and fundraisers, as well as Credit Union Youth Month activities, it was a busy month for all across the state. Below, our League offers an inside look at what some of our credit unions did this month.

  • Acadia FCU partnered with Fort Kent Knights of Columbus Council 1934 on their fundraiser, which brought in $2,242.54 for the Campaign for Ending Hunger.
  • Atlantic FCU proudly sponsored the Mental Health Matters 5K race hosted by KyleCares in partnership with Greely High School’s GreelyCares.
  • On National Pet Day, Bangor FCU shared photos of employee pets and dropped off a donation to the Bangor Humane Society of over 50 handmade toys made from recycled clothing.
  • Brewer FCU celebrated spirit week earlier in the month and collected donations for the Campaign for Ending Hunger.
  • Capital Area FCU held their 70th Annual Meeting at Snow Pond Center for the Arts.
  • Casco FCU hosted a food drive at Plummer’s Shop ‘n Save in Buxton on April 27. The credit union collected $279 in monetary donations and nearly 100 pounds of food, equivalent to 76 meals!
  • Credit Union Youth Month was celebrated all month at Central Maine FCU with a big giveaway! Any new Monty Moose youth members in the month of April would be entered into a drawing for a Nintendo Switch. Additionally, they’d receive $5 that could either be deposited into their accounts or be donated to the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society Animal Shelter. Existing members could be entered into the giveaway for a $5 donation, with a match by the credit union of up to $25 each.
  • Changing Seasons FCU, along with the rest of the Bangor Chapter of Credit Unions, promoted registration and event information for the 2024 Colors for a Cause 5K that the Chapter is hosting on May 19 to benefit Children’s Miracle Network hospitals.
  • Coast Line CU’s 98th Annual Meeting was held at the credit union on April 20.
  • To commemorate Earth Day, Community CU hosted a free Community Recycle Day 2024 Drive-Thru event on April 20.
  • On April 30, staff from Connected CU came together with the KV Chapter of Credit Unions to provide a Financial Fitness Fair to the juniors of Nokomis Regional High and Dexter Regional High School.
  • cPort CU offered free solar eclipse glasses at each branch to help members safely view the eclipse on April 8.
  • Cumberland County FCU encouraged local schools to reach out to schedule a Financial Fitness Fair with Maine Credit Unions.
  • In hopes of helping members take control of their finances, Dirigo FCU shared seven steps to financial literacy: learning to budget, understanding your credit score, opening a savings account, understanding loan options, expecting risk, securing your future, and reducing spending.
  • Downeast CU supported youth savings with a deposit match throughout Credit Union Youth Month by offering $10 to new youth members when they deposited $10 into their new account.
  • Staff at Eastmill FCU dressed in theme for their casual Fridays and donated $1 each to the credit union’s People Helping People fund.
  • Empeople CU reminded members that they will never call them to ask for personal information.
  • April 20 was an exciting day for Evergreen CU, whose brand-new Scarborough branch had its grand opening and ribbon cutting!
  • Five County CU recognized six months since the horrible shooting in Lewiston by wearing blue to honor those lost and to raise money for the Maine Resiliency Center in Lewiston. The Center has provided the community a tremendous amount of support.
  • Employees from Gardiner FCU participated in many community events, including supporting athletes at the Special Olympics State Swim Meet and walking in Maine State CU’s Feed ME 5K Walk to End Hunger.
  • Katahdin FCU sponsored an eclipse raffle and sold “walking tacos” during the eclipse activities to benefit the Campaign for Ending Hunger.
  • The American Red Cross’ “Sound the Alarm” event saw engagement from the team at KSW FCU, who helped provide education and install fire alarms to 31 homes from Cornville to Winslow. In total, 85 fire alarms and three deaf and hard of hearing devices were installed to assist 61 residents.
  • KV FCU reminded high school seniors to apply for their 2024 scholarship.
  • A full sleight of activities for youth members was offered at Lincoln Maine FCU during the month of April for Credit Union Youth Month.
  • A “Count the Kisses” competition arrived at Lisbon Community FCU, where youth members had the chance to guess the correct number of Hershey’s kisses for a chance at a prize.
  • Maine Family FCU announced their 2024 scholarship recipients: Emily Reed, Amanda Raymond, and Mallory Langlois. Congratulations to all!
  • In their spring newsletter, Maine Highlands FCU informed readers of the importance of utilizing two-factor authentication for accounts whenever possible.
  • Spirit Week was celebrated at Maine Savings FCU. Staff dressed up for these themed days: Oh, Sunny Day; Rain, Rain Go Away; Branch Alike Day; wearing blue for Autism Awareness; and Sports Day.
  • On its website, Maine Solutions FCU reminded members about the upcoming 58th Annual Meeting taking place on May 15.
  • Maine State CU hosted their annual Feed ME 5K Walk to End Hunger on April 27. The event was a great success and saw ample community support and enthusiasm. Great job to the team at Maine State CU for an incredible event!
  • A team of bowlers from Midcoast FCU helped Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mid-Maine surpass their $25,000 fundraising goal at their Bowl for Kids’ Sake 2024 event!
  • To keep members protected from fraud, Milestones FCU’s website alerted members of an SMS scam targeting area credit unions.
  • Throughout April, New Dimensions FCU hosted a food drive to assist the Greater Waterville Food Bank and Skowhegan Community Cupboard. All in all, they collected 272.7 pounds of food!
  • Northeast CU shared their annual partnership with Gather to fight food insecurity. Specifically, the credit union’s support helps with their Mobile Market Program, which provides nourishment to those in southern Maine and the New Hampshire seacoast area.
  • NorState FCU helped set up for and proudly sponsored the Top O’ Maine Trade Show in Madawaska on April 27.
  • On April 28, OTIS FCU hosted their Buffalo Check Painting FUNdraiser to End Hunger at Rustic Elegance in Farmington.
  • On Fridays throughout April, Oxford FCU rang in the rainy season by giving away Oxford FCU umbrellas to five people each Friday who engaged with providing comments on their social media post.
  • Ahead of the submission deadline, Penobscot County FCU encouraged high school seniors to apply for their chance at a credit union scholarship.
  • For Credit Union Youth Month, PeoplesChoice CU shared the importance of budgeting, saving, and planning for the future with their Boost Program for kids and teens.
  • Are you looking for the perfect Mother’s Day gift? Sabattus Regional CU began selling Yankee Candles as part of a fundraiser for the Campaign for Ending Hunger.
  • Saco Valley CU sponsored a meal for the Saco Meals Program, where over 100 meals were served to those in need of a warm, nutritious meal.
  • Staff at Seaboard FCU engaged in their 2nd annual Easter egg hunt for employees, and the Ellsworth branch took the Easter fun very seriously!
  • Sebasticook Valley FCU provided solar eclipse glasses to the community ahead of the solar event on April 8.
  • The first Annual Ending Hunger Snakebit Tournament was hosted by The County FCU at Evergreen Lanes bowling alley in Caribou on April 28.
  • In celebration of Earth Day, Town & Country FCU partnered with Portland Trails to sponsor a week-long celebration and series of events highlighting the work of the organization and the importance of taking care of our communities’ shared open spaces. To cap off the week, a group of credit union volunteers worked to help clean-up a portion of the Portland Trails’ Presumpscot River Preserve.
  • Trademark FCU excitedly announced their new landmark partnership with the Portland Sea Dogs! After many decades, the Coca-Cola Picnic Area has been reintroduced as the Trademark Federal Credit Union Picnic Area. The Trademark crew is excited to continue cheering on the local community in this new space.
  • TruChoice FCU joined other credit union peers and students on April 25 at the Bonny Eagle Financial Fitness Fair hosted by the Alex Ferguson Chapter of Credit Unions.
  • On April 15, University CU staff spent their Patriots Day holiday together across the state for their annual day of service and volunteering.
  • A team from Winthrop Area FCU participated in Maine State CU’s Feed ME 5K Walk to End Hunger, showing their support for their credit union peers and the Campaign for Ending Hunger at the same time.
