CU News and Events: June Edition

How did credit unions kick off the start of summer? By doing what they do best—giving back, helping members, and recognizing outstanding employees. Here is a look at what some of our credit unions were up to in June.

  • Acadia FCU took time to recognize Madawaska Branch Manager Julie Hayes for her ten years of outstanding service. Congratulations to Julie!
  • Atlantic FCU selected Mia Taranko of Thornton Academy to receive its $10,000 Atlantic FCU College Scholarship. The credit union also provided scholarships to four graduating seniors from Greely High School, Mount Ararat High School, Kennebunk High School, and Noble High School.
  • Brewer FCU’s President and CEO Dave DeFroscia joined Wayne Harvey on 92.9 The Ticket to discuss the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger Challenge.
  • Through its Casco Cares Campaign, Casco FCU is encouraging members to make donations to stock the Standish and Gorham food pantries. Donations to help these organizations can be made by visiting the credit union’s drive-thru.
  • Capital Area FCU recently congratulated all members of the Class of 2020, but gave a special shout-out to their very own Angie Stevens, who graduated from the University of Maine.
  • Central Maine FCU announced its Dominic J. Roux Scholarship winner on June 5. This scholarship is awarded annually to a member who is attending college or will be attending college the following semester.
  • Congratulations to Changing Season FCU’s AV team! The credit union took home four Telly Awards: three silver and one bronze. The Telly Awards honor excellence in digital and TV content across all screens.
  • Community CU supported the Campaign for Ending Hunger $100,000 Challenge by dressing Casual for a Cause. This dress down event helped remind members and employees to support local food pantries.
  • The merger of Connected CU and Winslow Community FCU was approved by the National Credit Union Administration and the Maine Bureau of Financial Institutions.
  • During a recent Facebook contest, cPort CU gave away $50 gift cards to Noble Barbecue, Riverside Golf Course, and Allagash Brewing. The giveaway helped members and supported local businesses at the same time.
  • Congratulations to Cumberland County FCU’s Alicia Shores on her 10th anniversary at the credit union.
  • Downeast CU recently awarded one lucky member $100 in its monthly eStatement giveaway.
  • Lorie Smallwood and Taia Federico have joined the team at Eastmill CU. Lorie is resuming her role as a full-time teller and loan clerk and Taia is training as a part-time teller.
  • Evergreen CU is honoring members’ furry friends by awarding several winners $25 gift cards and by giving a $25 donation to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland.
  • To honor dads this past Father’s Day, Five County CU held a Facebook contest and selected a random winner to receive a $25 gift card.
  • Gardiner FCUis helping support the Campaign for Ending Hunger through the sale of its cash calendars. Gardiner FCU will be giving away $2,300 throughout September to members who purchase a calendar.
  • Infinity FCU has continued providing lunch for various departments at Maine Medical Center, Southern Maine Health Care, and Northern Light EMMC.
  • Katahdin FCU used its digital road sign to individually congratulate graduates from Stearns Junior/Senior High School, Garrett Schenck High School, Katahdin High School, and Southern Aroostook Community School. Students also received gift cards from the credit union at graduation.
  • KSW FCU is engaging young members with a drawing contest for the Campaign for Ending Hunger Challenge! Members or parents of members ages 3-12 who show what they can do to end hunger in their drawing will be entered in a raffle for a $25 deposit into their youth account.
  • To encourage their members to support the Campaign for Ending Hunger’s $100,000 Challenge, KV FCU entered members who donated into a drawing to win a gift card to a local restaurant and a vehicle parking pass to a Maine state park.
  • Lewiston Municipal FCU awarded Molly Chicoine a $1,000 college scholarship. Molly will be attending Husson University this fall. Congratulations, Molly!
  • Lisbon Community FCUcelebrated Derek Roberts, Tonya Donovan, and Lori Knoedler’s birthdays this month. Happy birthday, everyone!
  • Maine Harvest FCU continues to promote COVID-19 and U.S. Department of Agriculture resources to help farmers on its Facebook page.
  • In its summer newsletter, Maine Family FCU warns members about the latest fraud threats to help keep members’ personal and banking information safe.
  • Maine Savings FCU celebrated the retirement of Beth Beals, an employee at its Milo branch. Beth retired after 23 years of service to the credit union. Congratulations, Beth!
  • Maine Solutions FCU expressed their sincere gratitude to Roland Schelasin, who recently resigned as Board Chairman after 15 years of service to the credit union. Roland is pursuing a job opportunity out of the state. Best wishes, Roland!
  • Maine State CU held a virtual Feed ME 5k to raise money for the Campaign for Ending Hunger. The credit union raised over $40,000!
  • Tena from Midcoast FCU’s Thomaston branch spent time volunteering for the Rockland Salvation Army. She helped the organization during its reopening.
  • Cat Blais, Monmouth FCU‘s President/CEO, joined the Board of Directors for the Monmouth Community Players. Congratulations to Cat on her new role!
  • On June 23, representatives from the Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce, Central Maine Growth Council, City of Waterville, and Bowman Construction joined New Dimensions FCU‘s Board of Directors and employees at a ribbon cutting ceremony at its new location on Silver Street in Waterville.
  • Northeast CU began accepting applications for its Love Your Community Awards. The credit union will be awarding $120,000 in assistance to local nonprofits in Maine and New Hampshire through November.
  • NorState FCU delivered over $23,000 worth of checks to local food pantries in need of assistance as part of the credit union’s Campaign for Ending Hunger.
  • OTIS FCU is partnering with Franchetti’s Hometown Variety to help end hunger. Patrons that purchase lunch from Franchetti’s will not only get a great deal but will have a portion of their meal contributed to the Campaign for Ending Hunger Challenge!
  • Oxford FCUhonored recent graduates by displaying their name on their electronic sign. Names were posted on behalf of family members who made donations to the Campaign for Ending Hunger Challenge.
  • Penobscot FCU awarded $500 scholarships to two seniors at Old Town High School. Congratulations to recipients Colin Rutherford and Hannah Sibley!
  • PeoplesChoice CUand Saco Valley CU are making sure seniors in their community are supported. Both credit unions have continued their sponsorship of Saco Parks & Recreation’s SENIORity Program, which provides free meals to area seniors.
  • Sabattus Regional CU celebrated employees with a staff appreciation week. During the week, employees enjoyed free coffee, custom cookies from Front Porch Bakery, and a barbeque lunch.
  • Seaboard FCU awarded five college scholarships to help students pursue their educational dreams. Scholarship recipients will be attending Maine Maritime Academy, Florida Atlantic University, St. Joseph’s College of Maine, Eastern Maine Community College, and Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Science in the fall.
  • The County FCU sponsored Caribou Parks and Recreation Department’s Outdoor Camp, which is free to local participants.
  • Town & Country FCU helped support local businesses by giving away a $50 gift card every day throughout the month of June.
  • Trademark FCU has used Facebook Live to host Storytime with Miss Jessica to engage their younger members and promote their youth savings account offerings.
  • University CU presented the UCU Star Award to Randy Manzo. The award is given quarterly to an employee who goes above and beyond to help members and teammates. Congratulations, Randy!
  • Account Specialists Darlene Polksy and Sarah Wellington at Winthrop Area FCU both celebrated birthdays in June. Happy birthday!
