Credit unions remained connected with their members and communities last month, even as people practiced physical distancing. Here’s a look at what some of our credit unions were up to in May:

  • Acadia FCU gave thanks to essential workers by distributing Visa gift cards to food service workers, postal employees, store clerks, and other essential workers in their community.
  • To support local restaurants, Atlantic FCU raffled off a $75 gift card to a lucky member using its Facebook platform.
  • Bangor Federal recently awarded $31,971 to 19 local food pantries within their field of membership. The credit union provided support to organizations that are helping families impacted by COVID-19.
  • Capital Area FCU offered free books to anyone in their community, regardless if they are a member.
  • Casco FCU posted a thank you video on Facebook honoring community members and essential workers.
  • Members of Central Maine CU donated supplies to help the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society.
  • Changing Seasons FCU celebrated National Scavenger Hunt Day by uploading QR codes on its website and offering Dunkin Donuts coupons to members who located all codes.
  • Coast Line Credit Union awarded two $1,000 scholarships to students studying business at Southern Maine Community College.
  • Community CU awarded two high school seniors with a Gerald R. Langelier scholarship to help with their future endeavors.
  • Members at Connected CU voted and approved the proposed merger with Winslow Community FCU.
  • cPort CU partnered with Amjambo Africa to serve as contributing authors for a monthly financial literacy column.
  • Cumberland County FCU gave away $1,000 by reimbursing 20 members up to $50 worth of takeout or delivery charges on their CCFCU credit or debit cards.
  • To help high school graduates, Dirigo FCU announced it will begin awarding scholarships on June 1.
  • Arielle Hornbrook, Downeast CU’s Senior Member Service Representative, volunteered at News Center Maine’s recent telethon to raise money for Good Shepherd Food Bank.
  • Evergreen CU introduced Money Matters, a program to educate its members about budgeting and how to manage their finances during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Five County CU raised over $2,000 and collected supplies for Camp Postcard, a free week-long summer camp for Maine 5th and 6th grader
  • Gardiner FCU donated $250 to the Animal Rescue of Kennebec to help animals in need.
  • To spread hope and positivity in its community, Infinity FCU provided $50 gift cards to members who performed a random act of kindness. The cards were purchased from local businesses.
  • KSW FCU helped local businesses by sponsoring free radio advertisements on Frank 106.9 and 105.5 The Wolf. The first winner was Nautilus Restaurant in Belfast!
  • KV FCU donated $2,000 to Meals on Wheels.
  • Though Lincoln Maine FCU was unable to provide financial literacy lessons in-person at the Ella P. Burr School due to their COVID-19 closure, the credit union created videos for students to view and watch at home.
  • Lisbon FCU celebrated three employee birthdays last month: Brooklyn Allen, Shelly Curtis, and Randi Edmonds! Happy Birthday!
  • Maine Family FCU partnered with Val’s Drive-In in Lewiston to provide free meals to children under the age of 13 during the month of April.
  • Maine Harvest FCU offered a webinar to help local farms navigate how to stay safe while participating in farmers’ markets during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Maine Highlands FCU provided a contribution to the Maine Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, which presented Eastern Maine Sports with the 2020 Media Award.
  • Maine Savings FCU provided members the option to defer loans, Visa credit card payments, and mortgages for three months beginning March 23 to help during the pandemic.
  • Maine Solutions FCU announced it will hold its Annual Meeting on June 17 at 11:30 a.m. via Zoom.
  • To raise money for the Campaign for Ending Hunger, Maine State CU hosted its annual 5K event virtually, allowing participants to walk on their own to practice social distancing.
  • Midcoast FCU’s Payment Solutions Manager Janet Bickford produced face masks for employees and residents at local hospitals and nursing homes.
  • Monmouth FCU fundraised $7,700 for the Campaign for Ending Hunger, which was then distributed to several food pantries. The credit union also donated $200 worth of snacks and $500 worth of gift cards to Monmouth Academy’s 2020 graduating class.
  • New Dimensions FCU provided COVID-19 relief to Skowhegan businesses by donating funds to support Maine Street’s Business Enhancement Committee, a technical assistance program that supports the local community.
  • NorState FCU Music in the Park 2020 invited the Anah Temple Shriner Clowns to the St. John Valley to bring cheer and laughter to residents living in local nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and around town.
  • Northeast CU participated in a parade for a community member whose Make-A-Wish had to be postponed due to COVID-19.
  • OTIS FCU announced they will be awarding five $500 scholarships to high school seniors in their community this year.
  • Oxford FCU offered free advertising on their digital road sign to local businesses for the month of May.
  • Penobscot County FCU celebrated the birthdays of their Branch and Marketing Manager, Jess, and Member Relations Specialist, Marcus!
  • PeoplesChoice CU sponsored a pizza party lunch for the Biddeford Police Department.
  • Sabattus Regional CU began fundraising for the Ending Hunger Challenge by having a contactless plant sale.
  • Saco Valley CU co-sponsored a meal distribution program, providing free meals to senior residents living in Saco.
  • The County FCU’s Presque Isle team held a small celebration to honor their colleague, Faith, who is graduating from the University of Maine Presque Isle. Congratulations, Faith!
  • Since May 1st, Town & Country FCU has donated $2,500 to 25 nonprofits in their community. The credit union donated to a new nonprofit every business day for the entire month.
  • To celebrate CU Youth Month, Trademark FCU deposited $5.00 into every youth account opened in May.
  • Several TruChoice FCU employees turned to Facebook to thank and show appreciation to essential workers for their tireless efforts during COVID-19.
  • On May 4, the University of Southern Maine announced that University CU is the recipient of its 2020 USM Exceptional Community Partner Award.
  • Winslow Community FCU hosted the American Red Cross for a blood drive. They had 38 donors—enough to save up to 117 lives.
