cPort Credit Union (CU) understands the importance of giving back to their community and helping today’s young scholars. The credit union recently presented fifty-five students from Riverton, Reiche, and Ocean Avenue Elementary Schools in Portland $100 college scholarships.
As part of the cPort Scholarship Program 2019, 393 third, fourth, and fifth grade students were asked to write essays about their career and higher education aspirations. cPort CU staff reviewed the entries and selected the winning essays based on effort, creativity, and the passion students demonstrated in their writing.
Scholarship recipients wrote about their desires to become doctors, veterinarians, social workers, and actuaries. They also mentioned their plans to attend schools like the Maine College of Art, Columbia and Harvard University.
cPort CU held ceremonies at all of the schools to recognize the program’s participants and to award scholarships to the winners in front of their classmates and families.
Since the program began in 2008, cPort CU has received over 4,500 essays from Portland elementary students.
