Congressman Poliquin Addresses Maine CU League Convention

Speaking before a packed crowd prior to the Maine CU League's Annual Awards Banquet on Friday, May 15, part of the League's Annual Meeting & Convention, Second District Congressman Bruce Poliquin, who serves on the House Financial Services Committee, called his job "to help create an environment where you can do what you do best – serve your members."

Congressman Poliquin, who took office this past January, has had a similar theme in previous meetings with the Maine Credit Union League and representatives. The Congressman, who proudly states that he is a long-time credit union member, listed his priorities as "reducing the regulatory burden that is negatively impacting the environment in which credit unions operate. I am supportive of common-sense regulation that has the oversight of Congress but agencies that are unchecked in writing and implementing arbitrary regulations that do not help credit unions and other financial institutions concern me. Credit unions play a key role in Maine and, as a member of the House Financial Services, I will advocate to reduce the burden that impedes with that role."

In introducing Congressman Poliquin, John Murphy, President of your League, said that the Congressman and his staff have been "receptive to our issues and concerns, and to finding solutions that benefit the financial services industry and consumers. His position on the House Financial Services Committee gives him a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on legislation, and he has indicated his willingness to support legislation that support credit unions."

Of attending his first Maine Credit Union League Convention, Congressman Poliquin stated, "I am so impressed by the pride and energy of the attendees from credit unions across Maine, and am encouraged to hear that many of Maine's credit unions are experiencing great growth that's resulting in hiring new employees and adding new members. What is happening with Maine's credit unions is a very positive story."
