Congratulations to Gary Desjardins of OTIS FCU, the 2025 Alexander Ferguson Outstanding Volunteer

OTIS President/CEO Chris Bouchard with Gary Desjardins.

Credit union volunteers are strong supporters and advocates for both credit unions and members, and our League recognizes the important role they play in ensuring the credit unions they serve continue to meet members’ needs and improve their communities. Each year at our Elevate conference’s Annual Awards Ceremony, one extraordinary volunteer receives the Alexander Ferguson Award for Outstanding Volunteer. On Friday, May 16, League President Elise Baldacci was thrilled to announce Gary Desjardins, Vice Chairman of OTIS FCU’s Board of Directors, as the 2025 Outstanding Volunteer!

Desjardins was nominated by OTIS FCU’s President/CEO, Chris Bouchard, along with the OTIS staff after 18 years of serving the credit union because they believe he “truly embodies the People Helping People philosophy.” Between navigating two leadership changes and constantly advocating for members, Desjardins has long been a strong supporter of OTIS FCU. With his help, the credit union has remained financially strong, with advocacy and volunteerism at their core.

He is often heard saying, “Let’s remember why we’re here,” reminding staff that they are there to help those in need. In his nomination, Bouchard explained how “Gary goes above and beyond by continually searching for opportunities for the credit union to help others and better serve our membership and community… He is a familiar face to our membership, often being one of the first to volunteer for credit union events.”

From assisting at Financial Fitness Fairs and grilling hotdogs for their International Credit Union Day celebration to serving as the Franklin County Area Manager for Special Olympics Maine (who he has been involved with for over 15 years) and supporting local sporting events, Desjardins lives People Helping People in all he does.

“His heart was made for helping others, and his contribution to the credit union and our philosophy is far-reaching in Maine,” shared Bouchard. “If we were to describe Gary in just a few words, it would be something we often hear him say, ‘What can we do to help?’ His generosity inspires those around him to be more aware of the needs of others.”

Thank you, Gary, for your true dedication to serving your community, and congratulations on being the 2025 Alexander Ferguson Outstanding Volunteer!
