With the calendar now turned to May, a reflection back on the month of April finds that the youth financial literacy efforts of Maine's credit unions received significant media coverage and exposure during the month. With April designated as Youth Financial Education Month, a legislative sentiment that recognized the youth financial literacy efforts of several organizations including Maine's credit unions, your League highlighted the leadership and initiatives of Maine's credit unions in media appearances and outreach throughout the state.
In all, your League and Maine's credit unions participated in three TV news segments, twelve radio interviews, numerous social media and online posts, and facilitated the airing of more than 750 public service announcements on several radio stations, at no charge, highlighting the Financial Fitness Fairs and other resources available for youth financial education. "Interest in not only the Financial Fitness Fairs, coordinated by credit union chapters and individual credit unions across Maine, but other initiatives, such as in-school credit union branches, FoolProof, and the High School Financial Planning books continues to grow. Your League and Maine's credit unions are widely recognized and praised for taking a leadership role in expanding awareness and involvement in youth financial education and money management opportunities among Maine children," stated your League's Vice President of Governmental & Public Affairs Jon Paradise.
During April, TV news segments featuring Maine credit unions' youth financial education programs aired on WCSH 6, WLBZ 2, WGME CBS 13 and FOX 23; radio iinterviews aired on WCYY, Z-107.3, 92 MOOSE, B-98.5, Big 104, Channel X Radio, Q-96, 99.9 The Wolf, 107.5 Frank FM, Q-97.9, The Big Jab, and Hot 104.7; online posts on sunjournal.com, wcsh6.com, wlbz2.com, wgme.com, wjbq.com, wbznfm.com, 92moose.fm, and 1075frank.com, as well as Twitter feeds on WCSH, FOX 23, and WCYY.
"The efforts of Maine's credit unions and our commitment to youth financial education attracted significant positive publicity during the month of April. The value of that interviews, news segments, free airtime and online visibility likely exceeded $40,000. We received a number of inquiries from schools, educators and others interested in learning more about our Financial Fitness Fairs, as well as other resources credit unions offer. Congratulations to the many credit unions that were involved in youth month activities and in further emphasizing the importance of money management skills at an early age," added Paradise.
