Maine credit unions are built on a simple but powerful idea: People Helping People. This philosophy isn’t just a tagline—it’s a way of life that shapes how credit union employees show up for their members and their communities. It’s what sets credit unions apart from other financial institutions, and it is why credit union employees across Maine are known not just for their service, but for their heart.
Each year, the League honors a special employee who exemplifies this philosophy with the Diane L. Oceretko People Helping People Award. Named in memory of Diane Oceretko—a passionate credit union advocate and tireless community volunteer—the award recognizes an individual whose selfless contributions make a lasting difference.
This year’s honoree is Jess Francis, HR & Executive Administrative Manager at UCU. Known for her compassion, generosity, and unwavering dedication to helping others, she has gone above and beyond to make her community a better place.
Whether supporting local events, organizing fundraisers like the Bangor Chapter of Credit Unions’ Kickball for Kids, or overseeing UCU’s Volunteer Committee, she leads by example and inspires those around her. Her commitment to giving back extends beyond her credit union and is evident in the work she does alongside her family. Earlier this year, the Francis family was recognized by the Orono Town Council with a special resolution thanking them for their role in establishing the Stillwater River Trail of Lights and their ongoing commitment to the Orono community. Her passion for volunteering also is reflected in her daughter’s actions. At just five years old, her daughter launched a “name-your-own-price” flower shop, donating 100% of the proceeds to charitable causes.
As shared by her colleagues in their nomination of Francis for the award, “Her passion for giving back is a direct reflection of the values she sees in her own family, carrying forward the spirit of service that defines her leadership and dedication.”
In addition to her community work, Francis is also a dedicated professional, bringing the same level of care and service to members at their credit union. Her ability to listen, support, and advocate for members has earned her deep respect among both peers and members.
“Like Diane, Jess goes above and beyond to help others in need and truly embodies the People Helping People philosophy. Whether it’s coordination, fundraising, or simply just participating—you can count on Jess to be there and always be 100% dedicated to the cause. She has an excellent reputation in the credit union movement and her dedication to helping people is at the core of who she is,” added another colleague.
The League is proud to recognize Jess Francis with the Diane L. Oceretko People Helping People Award. Her example reminds us all about what sets the credit union movement apart: the belief that by helping each other, we all rise together.
