Credit unions in the southern Maine area are invited to join Casco FCU in participating in the 2016 CA$H Greater Portland (GP) organization, specifically focusing on volunteers to help with free tax preparation. "It's been a great program for us to get involved in, and we would love to see more credit unions join us as volunteers to be part of this opportunity to help their local community," explained Kelsey Gillespie of Casco FCU. Your League has a representative on the CA$H Greater Portland Coalition work group. CA$H Greater Portland is an non-profit group that works to help low and moderate income families in the Southern Maine area make the most of their money. CA$H Greater Portland offers free tax preparation to qualified filers during the tax season and connects residents to financial education resources. In 2015, CA$H GP helped over 6,500 Mainers file their taxes for free and with your help even more can be done in 2016.
CA$H Greater Portland is looking for compassionate, energetic volunteers to help with the upcoming tax season. We have a variety of options to fit many skill levels and interests. Volunteer positions include: IRS-certified tax preparers, asset guides, greeters, schedulers, and multi-lingual interpreters.
Casco Federal Credit Union has been a CA$H GP Coalition member for over six years and Casco staff have helped out a several tax prep sites. "Participation in CA$H has allowed Casco FCU to better connect with members of their community who are underserved by the traditional banking system. CA$H has provided the opportunity to interact face-to-face with community members who either don't have a bank account or are not using banking services to their full advantage. Free Tax Preparation Events provide a friendly, non-threatening setting for credit unions to build a relationship with tax clients. Partnering with CA$H allows us to help provide a free service to these community members in need, and in turn they begin to trust us and view our credit union as a financial resource," remarked Jim Stone, President/CEO of Casco FCU.
