The FBI and the Texas Attorney General’s Office are urging Americans to be on alert for disaster-related fraud schemes that are emerging in response to the tragedy.
With the national attention provided to this heartbreaking event, your credit union may want to bring awareness of potential bad actors to your members. Encourage them to be cautious and to verify that any donations they make are going to legitimate, trustworthy organizations. While paying it forward in times of need can and does make a real difference, anyone interested in giving should do their research in order to keep personal and financial information protected.
Additionally, members should know never to offer financial assistance in the form of a gift card or cryptocurrency; and they should avoid sending cash, wiring money, and providing personal banking credentials to be able to donate. When donating online, look to see if the web address begins with “https.” These sites are typically more secure. Also look for the closed padlock symbol next to the URL in the browser to indicate the website’s security. Finally, don’t be afraid to ask questions, take the time needed to donate safely, and request a receipt for record keeping. Members will be be glad they took these steps before opening their wallet.
