The National Retail Federation’s 2020 Back to School Survey estimates that back to school spending will reach record levels—up $93 from this time last year. The League’s Jen Burke, Public Affairs and Communications Manager, spoke with WMTW Channel 8 and provided some tips parents should consider before they shop. These include:
- Creating a budget and sticking to it
- Taking stock of what you already have at home and re-using if possible
- Buying in bulk
- Spreading out purchases and tucking money away in savings in between each shopping trip
- Comparing prices and watching for sales at brick and mortar stores and online retailers
- If purchasing tech products like laptops or tablets, look for student discounts
- Shopping at thrift stores for extra savings
- Holding a clothing swap with close friends/classmates
