This week offers a moment for reflection. As we mark the 24th anniversary of September 11, we pause to remember the lives lost, honor the resilience shown in the face of tragedy, and reflect on the enduring spirit of our nation. It is a moment to come together with compassion and unity.
On Sunday, I traveled to Washington, DC, to join colleagues from across the country at America’s Credit Unions’ Congressional Caucus. While our political perspectives may differ, our shared commitment to protecting and strengthening the credit union movement is unwavering. It is this common purpose that binds us together. In today’s world, where division often dominates the headlines, it can be easy to overlook the connections that unite us; but if you take the time to look, common ground is never far away. Sometimes it takes effort to discover, but it is always worth the search.
The events of recent months—including this week’s tragedies in Utah and Colorado—have reminded us just how heartbreaking the consequences of division can be. It is imperative that we break this cycle. Now is the time to embrace our differences with respect, to listen with understanding, and to remember that disagreement does not have to mean disconnection.
Credit unions, by their very nature, embody this spirit of cooperation. It is in our DNA. Perhaps now more than ever, the principles that guide our movement can serve as an example of the power of unity and the value of working together for the good of all.
The philosophy of People Helping People not only is at the heart of the credit union movement but also serves as a principle everyone can embrace. Now more than ever, it is this spirit that can guide us forward. Thank you for being part of a movement that uplifts communities, strengthens the well-being of our members, and is united by cooperation—reminding us that common ground is always within reach.
