One of the most remarkable things about the credit union movement is how quickly and passionately we come together in times of need. Last week, I put out a call to action, asking credit unions to consider joining the League and Synergent in donating to Good Shepherd Food Bank, and the response has been nothing short of inspiring! We’ve been overwhelmed—in the best possible way—by how many credit unions, chapters, and vendor partners are stepping forward to help the Food Bank carry out its mission, despite recent cuts in federal aid.
The League and Synergent initially proposed matching credit union donations up to $35,000 to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Campaign for Ending Hunger. Incredibly, that goal was met within just a couple of hours. Thanks to the generosity of our movement, we’ve now increased our match to $100,000—and I’m thrilled to share that we’ll be providing Good Shepherd Food Bank with at least $200,000 next month. With new pledges continuing to roll in, I can’t wait to see where we land by the end of April. One thing’s for sure: these donations will translate into thousands of meals for hungry Mainers.
We’re also in the final stretch of Credit Union Youth Month! With two weeks to go, it’s not too late to get involved and inspire the next generation of savers. This year’s theme, “A Sea of Savings,” celebrates the adventures and opportunities that come with financial education. Whether it’s hosting a youth-focused event or promoting savings accounts for kids, every effort makes a difference in helping our youngest members build healthy money habits. And of course, we’re getting ready to host one of our favorite events of the year—our Annual Meeting and Convention taking place on May 15 and 16. Elevate reflects our commitment to lifting each other up through collaboration, innovation, and shared purpose, while also allowing time for meaningful conversation and networking. It will be two days filled with inspiring speakers, vendor exhibits, and some well-deserved fun—including a special awards ceremony to recognize those who go above and beyond. If you haven’t registered yet, I encourage you to secure your spot by April 25. My team and I can’t wait to see you there.
Throughout all our industry’s efforts—collaboratively and individually—I am consistently reminded that together, we are stronger. Whether it’s fighting hunger, empowering youth, or gathering to advance our movement, Maine’s credit unions are leading with heart and exemplifying the credit union difference every day. I am so proud to be a part of it!
