Maine credit unions kicked off the new year and decade by making a tremendous impact in their communities. Here is a look at what some of our CUs were up to throughout the month of January:

  • Acadia FCU made a $1,500 donation to the much anticipated Long Lake Ice Fishing Derby, which took place on January 25 and 26.
  • After a remarkable 30+ years of devoted service to Atlantic FCU, President Roger Sirois announced his retirement.
  • Bangor FCU donated hats, mittens, and clothing to Adoptive and Foster Families of Maine, Inc. on January 12.
  • On January 3, Brewer FCU was featured in a WABI TV segment about avoiding potential check and document fraud.
  • Capital Area FCU’s John Gregory celebrated his 17th work anniversary on January 6.
  • Casco FCU celebrated Free Credit Report Month throughout January at both branch locations.
  • On January 2, Central Maine CU announced it donated $12,000 to the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger in 2019.
  • The newest employee and longest tenured employee at Changing Seasons FCU both share a starting date of January 2. Sydnie has been at the CU for a month and Karla just celebrated her 22nd work anniversary.
  • Coast Line CU is offering a coupon for a free safe deposit box in their most recent newsletter.
  • Community CU spent the afternoon at the Lewiston Auburn Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Awards Dinner on January 23.
  • Connected CU welcomed a new employee in early January. Devon is a Card Specialist, New Accounts Representative, and a Member Service superstar!
  • cPort CU was proud to make a $3,000 donation to Portland Public Schools on January 28.
  • Cumberland County FCU set up a booth and talked with attendees of the Maine Wedding Association Bridal Show on both January 4 and 5.
  • Mark Samson, President of Dirigo FCU, received a Small Business Advocacy Award from the Lewiston Auburn Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce on January 23.
  • With it being the first month of a new year, Downeast CU published a “Financial Resolutions” playlist on their website. Members could complete the playlist for inspiration and tips on achieving their goals.
  • In their most recent newsletter, Eastmill FCU offered helpful tips on avoiding cashier’s check scams.
  • On January 10, Evergreen CU announced they raised $16,443.61 for the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger in 2019.
  • Five County CU’s CEO Julie Marquis was interviewed by Mike Lawson of CU Broadcast in January, where she discussed tips on enhancing the member experience.
  • Sally Woods celebrated her 24th work anniversary at Gardiner FCU on January 29.
  • A Mainebiz article published on January 30 highlighted Infinity FCU’s involvement in a New Mainer Teller Training Program. cPort CU also is involved with this exciting new program.
  • Katahdin FCU posted on its website that its shred event collected over 900 pounds of paper!
  • KSW FCU was very excited about releasing their first television commercial on January 15.
  • KV FCU is accepting applications for their scholarship program. Any member who is a graduating senior and will be attending college, trade school, or a post-secondary program can enter to win a $1,000 scholarship.
  • Lewiston Municipal FCU is celebrating their 75th year of service their members.
  • Lincoln Maine FCU held a Scholarship Bake Sale on January 3. Any sweet treats purchased that day will help fund scholarship opportunities for students graduating in 2020.
  • Lisbon Community FCU’s Jennifer Parent recent won the Rockstar Award. Jen was nominated by members who recognized her for always being available and taking the time to assist with questions.
  • Maine Family FCU shared some helpful tips on avoiding a recent Social Security scam through their social media channels on January 24.
  • Maine Harvest FCU received recognition in Governor Janet Mills’ State of the State address.
  • Maine Highlands FCU’s loan offers were recently recognized for their excellence in protecting members with GAP coverage. The loan officers were presented with a trophy and $500, which they decided to donate to Ending Hunger.
  • Maine Savings FCU has a “Member Stories” section on their website, where visitors can read about memorable experiences members have had with the CU.
  • Maine State CU recently announced they’ll be sponsoring the Maine Pond Hockey Classic in Sidney. All proceeds from the event benefit the Boys & Girls Club and the Alfond Youth & Community Center.
  • Midcoast FCU published their Winter Newsletter on January 9. Members can read the newsletter for insight on resolutions, the CU’s 64th Annual Meeting, and more.
  • New Dimensions FCU held their “Soup and Bread” event on January 31. All soups and stews were $5, and all proceeds benefited Ending Hunger and Maine Special Olympics.
  • NorState FCU has been accepting cans of soup as part of its Souper Bowl of Caring. The credit union is collecting items to help stock local community cupboards and food pantries throughout region.
  • On January 31, after over 16 years of outstanding service, Northeast CU’s Tom Walsh retired.
  • OTIS FCU posted extra dividends and/or interest refunds on January 2, with $520,678.73 being deposited into member accounts.
  • Samantha and Deb from Oxford FCU spent some time with seniors at Region 9 School of Applied Technology on January 24. They shared information about opening accounts, building credit, and applying for loans.
  • Penobscot FCU shared an insightful piece of information with their membership via social media on January 31. “What does it take to blow $10,000 a year? Just $24.70 a day in miscellaneous spending…”
  • Staff from PeoplesChoice CU were thrilled to volunteer for the Special Olympics Winter Games at Sugarloaf on January 25 and 26.
  • Sabattus Regional CU had a great time at their annual holiday party at DaVinci’s Eatery on January 18.
  • Saco Valley CU published an Employee Spotlight on January 22, highlighting Steve Curran. Steve has been with the CU for 29 years, enjoys camping, fishing, going to sporting events, and is said to have a voice like Frankie Valli.
  • Seaboard FCU’s January newsletter has great information on GAP Insurance, student loan financing, Zoe’s Club initiatives, and more.
  • As of January, Sebasticook Valley FCU’s dollar amount of loans outstanding from members has passed the $100 million mark. The CU was very excited to announce the growth in their newsletter, as that number was less than $14 million in 1999.
  • The County FCU collected soup cans throughout January as part of the Souper Bowl of Caring event. One member alone (Karen St. Peter) brought in 240 cans on January 10.
  • Town & Country FCU recently reached a very exciting milestone. The CU has reached 40,000 members, which was accelerated by their successful 40K Dash event.
  • While snow fell from the sky in late January, the frame of Trademark FCU’s newest branch continued to rise from its foundation.
  • Brittany from TruChoice FCU showed they’re already off to a good start in saving people money in 2020. She shared on social media that she saved a member $525 a month in payments.
  • University CU announced Renee Ouellette as their new President and CEO.
  • Winslow Community FCU announced that their Cabin Fever Book Sale is back on January 6. Members can browse their lobby for a great selection of hardcovers, paperbacks, and children’s books by bestselling authors.
  • Winthrop Area FCU shared a video that highlights why free4ME is the ultimate checking account for the 25-and-under-crowd on January 17.
