February may be the shortest month of the year, but credit unions around the state made it a productive one! Between work anniversaries, Ending Hunger Fundraisers, and outreach efforts, Maine’s credit unions made the most of the 28-day month. Here’s a look at what they were up to:

  • February 27 marked the 15th work anniversary of Acadia FCU’s CEO, David Desjardins. Happy anniversary, Dave!
  • Atlantic FCU began accepting applications for their 2019 Atlantic Scholarship. Available to members graduating from high school, the scholarship awards a total of $15,000 to aspiring college students.
  • Brewer FCU was thinking outside of the box and started a new Ending Hunger fundraiser on February 28. For $1, you can guess what date the giant snow bank outside their North Main Street location will finish melting. The winner will receive a $50 Visa gift card, with all proceeds benefiting Ending Hunger.
  • Casco FCU led a class on ‘money smarts’ at Bonny Eagle High School on February 5.
  • Throughout the month of February, Changing Seasons FCU collected items for the Bangor Humane Society.
  • Staff from Community CU spoke on the ‘Keys to Financial Success’ at Central Maine Community College on February 22.
  • Cony High School’s National Honor Society and JMG students partnered with Connected Credit Union for their penny wars, which raised $467.36 for the Maine Children’s Home for Little Wanderers.
  • cPort CU began a partnership with Fedcap in February to host financial literacy workshops for low-income parents.
  • Dirigo FCU started accepting applications for their Pauline Caouette-Moore Scholarship. Four students that are either members or eligible members will each receive a $1,000 scholarship.
  • The City of Auburn celebrated its 150th birthday on February 22. Auburn designated cake sites throughout the city, where people could stop in for a treat and celebrate. Keeping with the theme, Five County FCU had free sweets for members at their branch.
  • On top of their other Ending Hunger fundraisers, Gardiner FCU raised $785.50 for Ending Hunger during their Chili/Chowder Day on February 14.
  • Infinity FCU celebrated Random Acts of Kindness Week by donating pet supplies to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland and the Animal Welfare Society, scooping ice cream for the Boys & Girls Club of Southern Maine, and bringing diapers and baby wipes to United Way of Eastern Maine.
  • KV FCU opened their new Waterville Branch on February 19. An open house is scheduled for May 2, 2019.
  • During the month of February, Maine Savings FCU raised $763 for the American Heart Association.
  • On February 15, Midcoast FCU made a donation to Fuel for Friends – a program that assists residents of Bath, West Bath, Phippsburg, Woolwich, Arrowsic, and Georgetown with funds to purchase oil, gas, Kerosene, or wood to heat their homes.
  • Tanya Verzoni, New Dimensions FCU’s Director of Financial Education, discussed credit and avoiding pitfalls with the employees at Durathern in Vassalboro on February 7.
  • NorState FCU held their Annual Snowshoe Trek on February 24 at the Eagle Lake Skating Rink, with all proceeds benefiting the Campaign to End Hunger.
  • Oxford FCU kicked off the Financial Fitness Fair season with a visit to Telstar High School on February 27.
  • PeoplesChoice CU began accepting applications for their 2019 Maine Merits Community Scholarship last month. There are volunteerism, community leadership, entrepreneurial spirit, Maine business growth, and vocational craftsmanship scholarship opportunities totaling $6,000.
  • Sabattus RCU hosted a crock-pot sale on February 8, with all proceeds benefiting Special Olympics Maine.
  • Saco Valley CU started accepting applications for its scholarship program on February 11. Members who are high school seniors, current college students, and non-traditional students are eligible to apply.
  • Seaboard FCU’s Johanna Dorr was named Employee Campaign Manager of the Year by the United Way of Eastern Maine.
  • The County FCU collected 12,014 cans of soup during the Souper Bowl Challenge, with all cans going to help those in need in Aroostook County.
  • TruChoice FCU accepted applications for their scholarship throughout the month of February. Members planning to attend a college, university, or technical school in the fall are eligible to win one of four $500 scholarships.
  • University CU announced that $12,559.81 was raised for Ending Hunger by the generosity of their members, friends, and partners. UCU matched this amount for a total of $25,119.62, which was donated to the eight campus food pantries on the University of Maine system campuses.
  • Winslow Community FCU sold handcrafted Valentine’s Day cards in early February, with all proceeds benefiting Special Olympics Maine.
  • Winthrop Area FCU held a homemade Valentine’s card contest in early February, with all card entries being donated to veterans and the Maine Veterans Home.
  • York County FCU and Atlantic FCU gathered in Portland on February 25 for a speed-style “get to know you” activity, to help prepare for their upcoming merger.
