Credit Union News and Events


Credit unions didn’t let February’s winter freeze slow them down or discourage them from giving back to their communities. During the month of love, credit unions gave back in big ways. Here is a look at what some of our credit unions were up to last month:

  • Acadia FCU held a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony at its new Broadway location in Bangor on February 5.
  • Atlantic FCU announced it is giving away a total of $20,000 in scholarships to members who are graduating from high school this year.
  • Staff at Bangor Federal gave each other cards with inspirational messages to celebrate Valentine’s Day.
  • February snowstorms had Brewer FCU reminiscing about sunshine and warmer weather as they held a fun drawing for their members. The winner took home a Brewer FCU cooler.
  • Staff from Capital Area FCU volunteered for the Special Olympics at Sugarloaf.
  • During the month of February, Casco FCU collected donations for their Pet Food Drive for Animals. All donations will go to pets in need via Meals on Wheels.
  • Monty Moose members at Central Maine CU participated in a coloring contest for Valentine’s Day, with the winner receiving $25.
  • Changing Seasons FCU announced that residents of Waldo County can now become members at the CU.
  • Coast Line CU offered coupons for a free safe deposit box in their most recent newsletter. The coupon was good until February 28.
  • Jennifer Hogan, Community CU’s President/CEO, celebrated her 13th anniversary at the CU on February 26. Congratulations, Jen!
  • Wendy Brochu from Connected CU spent Valentine’s Day discussing financial literacy with students from Lincoln School and the Vivian E. Hussey School.
  • On February 25, staff from cPort CU spent the day discussing college aspirations with 3rd and 4th graders at Ocean Avenue Elementary School.
  • Angela Shepard, a Loan Officer at Cumberland County FCU, won the 40th Annual Larry Mercier Memorial Ice Fishing Derby on Roxbury Pond in late-February. Congratulations, Angela!
  • Mark Samson, President/CEO of Dirigo FCU, was the winner of the Lewiston Auburn Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce’s Small Business Advocacy Award. Congratulations, Mark!
  • Downeast CU shared members’ success stories from their Switch & Save promotion, which highlighted how thousands of dollars were saved.
  • Eastmill FCU is helping protect their members from fraud by sharing the latest scam alerts on its website.
  • Brenda Pollock, Evergreen CU’s Financial Counselor, spoke about credit scores on WCSH’s 207 on February 18.
  • Five County CU celebrated two branch birthdays in February. Their Rockland location opened on February 21, 2007 and their Windham location opened on February 23, 2005.
  • Franklin-Somerset FCU also is helping protect their members from fraud by posting warnings on what to look out for on the News Alerts section of its website.
  • Gardiner FCU raised a record-breaking $966 during their Annual Chili Chowder Day to Benefit Ending Hunger.
  • With tax season underway, Great Falls CU provided tips on filing on the home page of its website.
  • Staff from Infinity FCU’s Bangor branch visited the Shaw House on February 26, where they dropped off toiletries and non-perishables for their pantry.
  • Katahdin FCU CEO Tina Jamo participated in a CUNA Small Credit Union Committee meeting during the 2020 GAC in Washington, DC.
  • KSW FCU held a Valentine’s Day Bake Sale to benefit the Campaign for Ending Hunger and Special Olympics Maine.
  • KV FCU held a social media contest in late February, with the winner receiving tickets to the 2020 Snowball Gala and an insulated KV FCU cup.
  • Lewiston Municipal FCU published its application for a $1,000 scholarship for high school seniors.
  • Lincoln Maine FCU’s, Brittany Libbey was featured on the front cover of the CUcontent Marketing Hero newsletter. Way to go, Brittany!
  • Lisbon Community FCU welcomed Troop 488 at its branch on February 29. Members and staff from the CU were excited to support the local girl scout troop and pick up their favorite cookies.
  • Maine Family FCU wrapped up a complete rebuild of its website on February 18.
  • Members from Maine Highlands FCU enjoyed a day of free skiing at Big Squaw Mountain in Greenville.
  • In advance of Valentine’s Day, Maine Savings FCU used its social media channels to share tips on spotting romance scams.
  • In advance of February’s school break, Maine Solutions FCU reminded members about the importance of contacting the credit union before making debit transactions out of state.
  • Maine State CU entered a team in the Maine Pond Hockey Classic on February 8. All funds raised at the tournament benefited the Boys & Girls Clubs and YMCA at the Alfond Youth & Community Center.
  • Midcoast FCU made a $2,500 donation to the Corporal Works of Mercy’s Fuel for Friends program. The donation will help fund emergency home heating initiatives.
  • Monmouth FCU entered in the Chili/Chowder Challenge at the Monmouth Fish & Game facility on February 15.
  • New Dimensions FCU’s Elaine Latulippe celebrated her 22nd anniversary at the CU on February 17. Congratulations, Elaine!
  • On February 13, NorState FCU provided donations to St. John Valley Associates, Northern Aroostook Alternatives, and Central Aroostook Associations. Each organization received $2,000, money that was generated from fees collected by the credit union’s coin counter machines.
  • Northeast CU wrapped up its Random Acts of Kindness Week by dropping off supplies at the Animal Welfare Society, handing out snacks, flowers, and gift cards to members, and delivering lunch to the Westbrook Fire Department.
  • OTIS FCU announced its Soup Day for Ending Hunger raised a total of $869.50.
  • Oxford FCU’s Norway branch hosted a Business After Hours event in February with the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce.
  • Thanks to Penobscot County FCU, for every reusable Fight Hunger bag sold at Hannaford’s Broadway location throughout the month of February, the Campaign for Ending Hunger received a $1 donation.
  • PeoplesChoice CU announced it is accepting applications for its 2020 Maine Merits Community Scholarship Program.
  • In collaboration with the Sabattus Mountaineers, Sabattus Regional CU is selling winter hats to raise money for Special Olympics Maine.
  • Saco Valley CU began advertising their Dine to Donate event, which will take place at the Scarborough Texas Roadhouse on March 12. The restaurant will donate 10% of total food purchases from 5pm-8pm to the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger.
  • On February 21, Seaboard FCU turned to its social media channels to share some helpful information on insurance protection.
  • Sebasticook Valley FCU’s latest newsletter highlights four cost-saving home improvements to do this winter.
  • The County FCU’s new location in Mars Hill is getting closer to completion. Siding is now up on the building!
  • Town & Country FCU’s Jon Paradise was featured in a WGME segment which highlighted the importance of building an emergency savings plan.
  • Trademark FCU’s new location in South Portland is also getting closer to completion. For up-to-date news on the branch’s status, follow the SoPo blog on the CU’s website.
  • Throughout the month of February, members who referred a friend to TruChoice FCU received $200 after a new account was opened.
  • University CU held a first-time home buyer course on February 29 at Husson University in Westbrook.
  • On February 18, Winslow Community FCU announced a $1,000 scholarship opportunity for graduating high school seniors.
  • Staff from Winthrop Area FCU participated in some teambuilding exercises in early-February, successfully making their way out of an escape room in Waterville and enjoying a delicious lunch at Portland Pie Company.
