Portsmouth, N.H. – The CA$H Coalition’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program proved to be successful once again, thanks to tremendous volunteer efforts and local support. The VITA initiative offers free tax preparation services to members of the community, made possible by the dedication of the Rockingham Community Action Program and the United Way of the Greater Seacoast. Northeast Credit Union’s (NECU) Portsmouth branch hosted the program once again and continued their support with a $5,000 donation to assist with needed funding.
This year, NECU helped process 555 federal returns, which resulted in $714,520 in refunds returned to individuals and families in the Portsmouth area. The CA$H Coalition’s VITA program processed 227 additional returns across the seacoast.
“We continue to be impressed by the program’s volunteers, who selflessly devoted their free time to assist those in need of guidance,” praised Tim Collia, Northeast Credit Union’s President and CEO.
“The VITA program is another example of how our communities grow stronger when we work together. Thank you for your outstanding work.”
“United Way of the Greater Seacoast has had a long standing commitment to ensuring our community has access to low cost financial literacy support and tax preparation,” said Lauren Wool, Senior Director of Community Impact for United Way. “Together with Southern NH Services, countless volunteers, and partners like Northeast Credit Union, we are able to serve more than 1,000 individuals each year through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. This often leads to individuals and families receiving Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) which can help them to pay down debt or open a savings account, both steps on a pathway to increased financial stability”.
