At the Annual Maine Credit Union League’s Breakfast with the state’s Congressional Delegation on Tuesday, February 27, on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., all four members of the Delegation mentioned the positive impact of Maine’s credit unions on “Maine people and communities.”
“From financial education to ending hunger to another successful Swish-Out Childhood Cancer Challenge Basketball event, Maine credit unions do so much for your communities. This is in addition to being focused on helping your members with their financial needs,” stated Senator Susan Collins in remarks to more than 100 credit union representatives from Maine, the largest-ever group from Maine CUs to attend the event.
“I am delighted to support legislation that helps credit unions to better meet the needs of their members. You are important to the nearly 700,000 members that belong to a credit union in Maine,” remarked Senator Angus King, referencing legislation that would reduce unnecessary regulatory burden on the classification of mortgages on residences with 1-4 dwellings.
“My first account was with a credit union and I am still a proud credit union member today. From providing nearly 3,500 good paying jobs to Mainers at the credit unions across Maine to the positive impact you have on the economy of our state, credit unions are so important to Maine,” Congressman Bruce Poliquin observed in his remarks at the Breakfast.
Though Congresswoman Pingree was unable to attend, a legislative aide who works on financial services issues, Tim Stein, made a few remarks on her behalf. “Congresswoman Pingree is a strong supporter of credit unions, and the important role that you play in the lives of hundreds of thousands of Mainers and your communities.” The Congresswoman has supported and/or sponsored a number of important pieces of legislation on behalf of credit unions, and the League and Maine’s credit unions’ appreciation for that support was conveyed to Mr. Stein to share with her.
“It was great to hear how highly-respected Maine’s credit unions are by our elected officials in Washington, D.C. The value and benefits of credit unions are recognized and appreciated by our entire Delegation, and having more than 100 credit union representatives from Maine take the time to be in Washington to represent credit unions sends a strong message, as well,” remarked Todd Mason, President of the Maine Credit Union League.
