Preparing for New IDCheck Requirements


The ability to access your account at branches across the state, as well as across the country, has long-been a convenient perk for credit union members. With over 160 participating branches in Maine and 5,600 across the country, Shared Branching has allowed members to access their money on the move. With imposter fraud on the rise, new security measures are being implemented to prevent criminals from cashing in on that convenience. Starting May 1, out-of-state members visiting participating Shared Branching locations in Maine will need to verify their identity via IDCheck.

This new security screening will help your credit union validate the identity of guest members during Shared Branching transactions while minimizing the risk of potential fraud. With the May 1 compliance deadline quickly approaching, the League has added helpful language to the Shared Branching page and Shared Branching Locator tool on the Maine Credit Unions’ website.

As attested by our state’s nickname, Vacationland, Maine is a popular tourist destination. The warmer months will bring guest members from across the country to our communities. To avoid confusion, ensure more favorable interactions, and streamline the process, the language featured can help inform members visiting from other states about transaction requirements at a Shared Branching location. If your credit union participates in Shared Branching and has not yet added language to your website, you may consider including the following:

How IDCheck Works

Prior to or upon arrival at a Shared Branch location, visit https://verify.coop.org and follow these steps:

Enter your credit union’s name or choose from the dropdown list.

  • Enter your Member Number and the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number.
  • Upload a photo of the front of your government-issued ID.
  • Upload a photo of the back of your government-issued ID.
    • Your ID is securely stored and can be reused for future transactions.
  • Take a selfie for identity verification.
    • Your selfie is securely stored for future use.
  • Receive a unique verification code (valid for 20 minutes).
  • Present this verification code to the teller to proceed with your transaction as normal.
