Credit Union Advocacy on Full Display This Week in Washington, DC

Over 100 representatives from Maine and thousands of credit union employees and volunteers from across the country came together this week in Washington, DC, for America’s Credit Unions’ Annual Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC). The popular event showcases the importance of advocacy and ensuring that the credit union voice is both heard and represented in Congress.

From inspirational speakers to break-out sessions, networking dinners, awards ceremonies, legislative meetings, and more—this year’s event truly had something for everyone. Maine’s own advocacy army even enjoyed breakfast with our state’s entire congressional delegation on Tuesday morning at the historic Monocle Restaurant on Capitol Hill.

“It is an honor to join so many credit union advocates in our nation’s capital,” shared Robert Caverly, League Vice President of Advocacy & Outreach. “Once again Maine turned out in a big way for this event. Each attendee did their part to advance our advocacy agenda. Our congressional delegation makes coming to our legislative breakfast a priority and we greatly appreciate meeting with their staff to discuss our credit union issues, including protecting the credit union tax status. This year’s GAC was a great success and I am already looking forward to next year!”

Several Maine representatives were on hand to attend the National Credit Union Foundation’s Wegner Awards dinner on Monday evening, where Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger was honored with one of the 2025 awards. Additionally, Evergreen CU’s Emma Pierce proudly represented Maine throughout the event as part of this year’s class of GAC Crashers.

Raising funds for the America’s Credit Union (ACU) PAC (formerly CULAC) also was a core component of GAC. The ACU PAC helps elect credit union champions of our movement into office. Over $284,000 was raised during the conference—with final totals still being calculated. From this amount, an impressive $14,333 was raised by Maine attendees!

Stay tuned for future League Advocacy events in 2025 additional details will be coming!
