League Awards Spotlight: Alexander Ferguson Award

Throughout the nomination period for the League’s 2025 awards program, we will feature an award category to help credit unions identify individuals who are deserving of a special honor. There is no better way to demonstrate your appreciation for someone special at your credit union than by nominating them for a League award.

Volunteerism is at the very heart of the credit union movement. It is one of the biggest ways credit union advocates demonstrate and live out the People Helping People ideals, prioritizing community service and support.

Credit union volunteers serve in a variety of roles, from holding board seats and assisting on supervisory committees to lending a helping hand at events geared towards fighting hunger, uplifting Special Olympics athletes, assisting local Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, and so much more. Because of the dedicated volunteers our movement is fortunate to have, Maine’s credit unions are stronger and better-positioned to serve the communities they love.

You have the special opportunity to recognize an outstanding volunteer at your credit by nominating them for the Alexander Ferguson Award. Highlighting their impact is simple. Visit the League’s website and complete the online form by March 14. Nominators should explain in detail how the nominee has demonstrated outstanding leadership while serving as a volunteer, as well as feature their exceptional achievements and personal commitment to the credit union. It is also recommended to include any involvement the nominee has within the community, such as other civic service and engagement. A best practices guideline has been created to help nominators touch on key points in their submission of why their nominee should be chosen.

At the 2024 Elevate conference, Jeannine DeRosby, Board Director and longtime supporter of New Dimensions FCU, was honored with the Alexander Ferguson Award for the countless hours she has given the credit union in a variety of service roles. Nominator Ryan Poulin, CEO of New Dimensions FCU, detailed that DeRosby “has been an incredible asset to New Dimensions and has demonstrated her leadership in countless ways while helping our credit union grow.” He went on to explain how instrumental DeRosby has been through multiple circumstances and changes, always keeping the members’ best interests top-of-mind.

Nominating a volunteer is an excellent way to recognize someone special at your credit union, showing them how much they mean to you. The Alexander Ferguson Award will be presented on Friday, May 16 at the League’s 87th Elevate: Annual Meeting & Convention with the other annual awards.
