Filling Tanks and Giving Thanks

People Helping People is what credit unions are all about. Last week, Connected CU partnered with 107.9 The Mix to surprise community members with a free tank of gas. Offering help at the pump was a fun way to spread kindness and allow the credit union to give back in an unexpected way.

The reaction? Pure joy and appreciation by the lucky recipients. Here are some of the stories collected during the give-away:

  • One woman, who was with her daughter and uncle, told the credit union that she’s not usually on the receiving end of this type of generosity. While she comes from a family of six children and has children of her own, she is always the one trying to help others. She said she typically puts $20 worth of gas in her car because that is all she can afford. She said she felt blessed by the kind gesture.
  • One young man had to borrow $20 to get gas so he could travel to work this week. The credit union filled his tank up for $40, which felt like a million dollars to him.
  • Another woman told the credit union that she was literally down to her last dollar. She is living on a fixed income and just had $900 worth of auto repairs done to her vehicle. She kept saying it was her lucky day and felt really uplifted when she left.

“No matter what is going on in anyone’s life or in this crazy world, people always respond to kindness,” shared Wendy Brochu with Connected CU’s Marketing/Business Development Department. “We are subjected to so much negativity and noise on a daily basis that we sometimes forget to look up, make eye contact, open a door, or share a smile. This day for me was rewarding, not only because I could do something nice for someone, but it presented the opportunity for me to realize how fortunate I am. Working in the credit union industry is just the icing on the cake that allows us to give back. Sometimes the little gestures mean the most!”

We couldn’t have said it better, Wendy!
