League Awards Spotlight: Alexander Ferguson Award

Throughout the nomination period for the League’s 2024 awards program, we will feature an award category to help credit unions identify individuals who are deserving of a special honor. There is no better way to demonstrate your appreciation for someone special at your credit union than by nominating them for a League award.

Volunteers are at the heart and soul of the credit union movement. They serve on credit union boards and supervisory committees—they even volunteer at events to demonstrate service to the community by fighting hunger, supporting Special Olympics, or assisting their local Children’s Miracle Network hospital. Maine credit unions are stronger because of the robust roster of volunteers that help us carry out our shared People Helping People philosophy.

You can recognize an outstanding volunteer at your credit union by nominating them for the Alexander Ferguson Award. Highlighting them is easy. Visit the League’s website and complete our online form by March 17. Nominators should summarize how their nominee has demonstrated outstanding leadership while serving as a credit union volunteer. Special achievements including credit union milestones that occurred during nominee’s tenure (i.e., asset/member growth or the implementation of innovative services to better serve members) should be noted. The nomination should demonstrate how the individual has gone “above and beyond” the typical volunteer requirements, highlighting their unique leadership style, personality traits, philosophy, and/or interactions with staff and members. Additional community service outside the credit union can also be shared.

Jerry Caruso

In 2023, Jerry Caruso, a longtime Board member at Cumberland County FCU was recognized with this award honor. Caruso was nominated by the credit union’s President & CEO Scott Harriman and its Chief Financial Officer Ryan Grund.

When nominating Caruso for the award last year, Harriman stated, “Jerry is a calm and confident Chairman—always sharing his knowledge and expertise to help grow the credit union. He was a strong advocate of the move to our loan by phone model in 2010 and continues to be involved in making decisions for the future of the credit union. There is no one more deserving of the Alexander Ferguson Volunteer of the Year Award than Jerry Caruso.”

The Alexander Ferguson Award will be presented on Friday, May 17 at the 86th Annual League Convention. For more information about the League’s Convention awards, please contact Jordan Inkley, League Conference and Event’s Manager, at jinkley@mainecul.org.
