Credit unions maximized on moments with members this August between member appreciation celebrations and participating in community events. With another busy month behind us, the League provides an inside look at what some of our credit unions were up to during the last full month of summer.
- Acadia FCU continued hosting member appreciation pop-up events through August 14. They visited all eight branch locations, feeding nearly 1,000 people and treating members to fun!
- This summer, Atlantic FCU is donating $10 to Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger for every run scored by the Portland Sea Dogs. With 117 runs scored in July, the credit union donated $1,170 in August.
- A group of 18 from Bangor FCU came together at the Champion the Cure Challenge in honor of employee Kate Turlo’s late husband, Tom. “Turlo’s Tenacious Tribe” raised $3,460 for the cause!
- The Brewer Police Department saw support from Brewer FCU for their Young Citizens Public Safety Academy, a program designed to encourage the next generation in law enforcement.
- Capital Area FCU shared multiple fraud prevention and awareness tips with members on social media.
- Friday, August 4 brought Casco FCU’s second Member Appreciation Barbecue of the summer. They welcomed members with catering from Brian’s BBQ and cookies from Cookie Love 207. A portion of Cookie Love 207’s proceeds were donated to the Campaign for Ending Hunger.
- Changing Seasons FCU shared information with members online for their upcoming annual Bikes, Beans, and Mean Machines event on September 16. They hope community members will join them for music, delicious food, and a 100-mile motorcycle ride.
- Community CU attended Pine Street Community’s Back2School Party on August 23. Participating in the fun was a great way to kick off the school year.
- On its website, Coast Line CU reminded members to that they could make a splash this summer with an affordable boat loan from the credit union.
- Connected CU’s summer newsletter announced the upcoming retirement of CEO Richard Lachance after 24 years with the credit union and 39 years working in the industry. Cathy Bond, President, will assume the role of CEO upon Rick’s retirement this fall. Thank you, Rick for your years of dedicated service to the credit union movement!
- cPort CU celebrated Member Appreciation Week at its branches. The credit union provided members with lunch, games, and giveaways.
- The Westbrook branch of Cumberland County FCU celebrated its 25th anniversary. They offered snacks and free gifts to members in their lobby to commemorate the occasion.
- On August 20, Dirigo FCU sponsored Family Fun Day at the Great Falls Balloon Festival.
- Downeast CU sponsored the Calais International Homecoming Festival’s Sidewalk Chalk Contest. Staff from the credit union joined in on the fun and engaged with the community at the event.
- Eastmill FCU solicited volunteers for their Supervisory Committee, informing members that this Committee is crucial to safeguarding members’ interest and ensuring the credit union’s compliance.
- The Windham leadership team from Evergreen CU accepted the Best Credit Union/Bank and Mortgage Services Award from The Windham Eagle. Congratulations to Team Evergreen!
- Staff from Five County CU attended the Maine Lobster Festival in Rockland. The credit union’s booth at the event featured balloon twisting from Party Palooga.
- For the month of August, Franklin-Somerset FCU collected school supplies in boxes in their lobbies for the eight schools within their communities: Stratton, Kingfield, Strong, Phillips, Skowhegan, Madison, and Farmington.
- On August 14, Gardiner FCU invited members to enjoy their annual lunch in support of Special Olympics Maine.
- Katahdin FCU hosted a craft table at the Millinocket Memorial Library End of Summer Festival on August 18.
- KSW FCU’s summer newsletter announced the recipient of their James A. Veilleux scholarship is Joshua Stephen Hills. Congratulations, Joshua!
- In hopes of supporting local teachers heading into the 2023/2024 schoolyear, KV FCU asked members to nominate a teacher in the Waterville, Augusta, and Oakland school districts to receive $1,000 each towards materials needed for their classrooms. Nominations are due by September 1.
- The local Penobscot Valley Humane Society was given supply donations from members at Lincoln Maine FCU. Those who donated to the pet supply drive were entered to win a quilt handmade by a credit union employee.
- Twenty different baskets were raffled at Lisbon Community FCU to benefit the Campaign for Ending Hunger.
- Maine Family FCU welcomed Andrew McGeorge as its new Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. Andrew is looking forward to rejoining the credit union industry and advancing the economic vitality of Androscoggin County.
- In their newsletter, Maine Highlands FCU shared information on dormant accounts and how to keep them from becoming dormant.
- Maine Savings FCU excitedly announced the purchase of the Hampden Congregational Church property. The church services concluded in June, and the building had housed the Hampden Food Cupboard for years. Now, the Cupboard can continue meeting the needs of hungry community members.
- Maine Solutions FCU advertised its special Labor Day vehicle finance promotion to its members on its website.
- Maine State CU participated in the Gray Wild Blueberry Festival.
- The AIO Food and Energy Assistance Program in Rockland received a $1,700 donation from Midcoast FCU to support their efforts to help those in Knox County in need of food and energy assistance.
- Milestones FCU reminded members on its website that the summer 2023 skip-a-payment offering runs through August 31.
- Branches of New Dimensions FCU sold gift card calendars throughout the month. Winners will be drawn daily in September.
- To help their members stay cool and raise money for the Campaign for Ending Hunger, NorState FCU coordinated Freeze Friday. Popsicles were sold for $2 and all proceeds benefited the Campaign.
- Northeast CU collected donations for their Nourish Your Community Food Pantry Drive.
- On August 25, “Totes for Teachers” provided free school supplies (and freshly popped popcorn) to school employees from multiple districts within OTIS FCU’s field of membership.
- Oxford FCU announced the winners of its 2023 back to school giveaway. $200 gift cards were provided to ten educators at area schools.
- Cale Burger joined Penobscot County FCU as the new SVP – Member Business. Welcome, Cale!
- August was PeoplesChoice CU’s Member Appreciation Month! This year, the credit union came together to celebrate 60 years of service with branch barbeques, raffles, games, giveaways, and a special “Beat the CEO” cornhole challenge.
- Summer is dwindling, and Sabattus Regional CU already has pumpkin spice, football, and crisp fall air on the brain! Their Fall 50/50 raffle started August 1 and will be sold until September 22 to benefit the Campaign for Ending Hunger.
- Saco Valley CU offered important financial education on their website to help their members detect card skimmers on ATM and merchant terminals.
- The Orland Community and Fitness Center hosted Seaboard FCU’s annual Summer Picnic on August 27. Support was provided by Jeff’s Catering & Event Center.
- Sebasticook Valley FCU’s newsletter encouraged members to utilize the Shared Branching feature of their membership— something the credit union considers as one of the best-kept secrets to credit union membership!
- The County FCU filmed a new ad that will be airing on a screen near you soon. The commercial features some of the amazing benefits of becoming a member of the credit union.
- Town & Country FCU teamed up with the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland (ARLGP) in August to celebrate “Dogust”—a monthlong annual partnership where the credit union spotlights a dog up for adoption every Tuesday and Thursday through social media. In addition, the credit union contributed $100 in conjunction with each of the ten dogs spotlighted in support of the ARLGP.
- Trademark FCU was recognized as an Inclusive Workplace for 2023 by the Best Companies Group and COLOR Magazine. The credit union feels incredibly honored to receive this distinction. Congratulations!
- TruChoice FCU recently hosted the championship for its summer-long cornhole tournament, the TruCorn Tourney. Congratulations to the winners!
- Staff from University CU welcomed students onto each of the University of Maine campuses, excited to hand out UCU swag.
- One lucky student was the winner of Winthrop Area FCU’s Back-to-School Raffle that included lots of school supplies, an L.L. Bean backpack, and a matching L.L. Bean lunchbox.
