CU News & Events – February Edition


February was an exciting month for the League and Maine’s credit unions. Notably, we announced the collective success of our fundraising efforts to end hunger—reaching $1 million for the first time! Several credit unions announced and/or held annual meetings, and all contributed in meaningful ways to uplift their communities. Here is a look at what some of our credit unions were up to last month.

  • At the Greater Fort Kent Area Chamber of Commerce annual meeting and dinner on February 9, Acadia FCU received the Member of the Year Award. Congratulations to the team at Acadia FCU on this recognition for a job well done!
  • Atlantic FCU began accepting applications for its Atlantic Federal Credit Union Foundation Scholarship. The credit union is accepting applications through March 24.
  • Bangor FCU was a proud sponsor of the 2023 Heart of Ellsworth Downtown Grants Program.
  • Another successful Pasta & Sauce Drive wrapped up at Brewer FCU, and donations will be directed to C.H.E.F.S. to help those in need.
  • Capital Area FCU presented their annual Power of One Award to Toby and Trisha Watson of Statewide Towing at their annual meeting. The winner of this award is chosen based on volunteer efforts in the community and towards the credit union’s efforts to help Special Olympics. Congratulations, Toby and Trisha!
  • As a result of their Fuel the Love fundraiser, Casco FCU donated over $1,500 to United Way’s Keep ME Warm program.
  • Staff from Changing Seasons FCU helped members get Super Bowl-ready on February 10 with a tailgate party. They offered steamed hot dogs, chips, and cookies, and collected donations for the Campaign for Ending Hunger.
  • Coast Line CU shared tips to fight fraud in their winter newsletter.
  • On February 18, Community CU attended the Turner Ridge Rider One Lunger Vintage Snowmobile Race to raise funds for the Campaign for Ending Hunger.
  • Connected CU spent time with students at the Hall-Dale High School Financial Fitness Fair on February 2.
  • Employees of cPort CU wore red on February 3 to show their support for American Heart Association Maine and raise awareness for heart disease in women.
  • Cumberland County FCU wished members a Happy 207 Day on February 7.
  • Dirigo FCU dared members to fall in love with their new, optimized digital banking app and online platform that launched on February 14.
  • Downeast CU announced the success of their members’ efforts to support the Campaign for Ending Hunger with 2,746 pounds of food and $7,399 donated in 2022.
  • Eligible high school seniors can now apply for the chance to be awarded one of Eastmill FCU’s $500 scholarships until May 17.
  • Evergreen CU featured Maine Mariners Hockey, WinterKids, Portland Museum of Art, and Teens to Trail in their weekly Community Spotlights.
  • On February 22, Five County CU conducted a hybrid annual meeting.
  • As scams and fraud attempts unfortunately increase, so does the need for member safety. Franklin-Somerset FCU shared information on their website regarding the latest scams to be on the lookout for, as well as how to avoid them.
  • Congratulations to Gardiner FCU, who had the highest per member contributions to the Campaign for Ending Hunger in 2022! The credit union was recognized at the League’s annual Ending Hunger celebration.
  • With its closing in observance of Presidents’ Day, Great Falls FCU encouraged members to take advantage of iTalk, online banking, and mobile banking to stay on top of their finances.
  • Infinity CU featured BSA Manager Anna Palmer in its monthly Employee Spotlight. Anna works at Infinity CU’s Westbrook location.
  • High school seniors who are members at Katahdin FCU can now apply for a $500 college scholarship. Applications must be received by May 15 for consideration.
  • On February 10, KSW FCU attended the Skowhegan Regional Chamber of Commerce’s ribbon cutting ceremony for The Solon Hotel Restaurant & Pub and was excited to support a new community business.
  • Staff from KV FCU assisted at the Hall-Dale High School Financial Fitness Fair. They loved meeting up with other local credit unions to teach students the importance of managing their money.
  • Online, Lincoln Maine FCU encouraged members to get a head start on their taxes to ensure they have time to fully understand and complete the filing process.
  • Lisbon Community FCU held its annual meeting on February 26.
  • Shantel Fournier was promoted to Assistant Vice President of Mortgages and Member Business Lending earlier this year at Maine Family FCU. Congratulations, Shantel.
  • Maine Savings FCU announced a flurry of exciting concerts coming to the Maine Savings Amphitheater later this year.
  • In an effort to raise money for the Campaign for Ending Hunger, Maine State CU hosted a Treats & Eats event on February 14. The Gray location sold donated baked goods, while the Waterville and Augusta branches supplied warm lunches and desserts.
  • The team at Midcoast FCU was named a CUs Share for ME Credit Union Leader for reporting 3,064 volunteer hours in 2022.
  • Milestones FCU is accepting applications for its scholarship program. Graduating high school seniors can apply up until March 24.
  • To support CULAC, New Dimensions FCU sold 50/50 tickets at their branches during the month of February.
  • NorState FCU continued to sponsor Grand Isle Knights of Columbus Council #8313 and the Ladies of St. Anne’s Winter Blast event. Activities began January 15 and will run through March 26 at the Grand Isle Community Center.
  • Northeast CU shared helpful information on the ins and outs of filing a tax return.
  • Plenty of winter weather means lots of time for winter activities! OTIS FCU sponsored a free ski night at Spruce Mountain on February 10. A few OTIS FCU employees assisted with concessions and handed out OTIS swag.
  • Joann Bisson was announced as Matt Kaubris’ successor in the role of President & CEO of Oxford FCU. Joann joined the credit union in January 2022 with over 20 years of experience in the financial services industry. Congratulations, Joann! Matt will remain in an advisory capacity until his retirement date.
  • PeoplesChoice CU thanked everyone who donated to their Souper Bowl Drive. With the help of many thoughtful members, the credit union donated 171 cans of soup to food pantries in Biddeford, Saco, Sanford, and Wells.
  • Sabattus Regional CU began a St. Patrick’s Day-themed fundraiser for Special Olympics Maine. A drawing will take place on March 17.
  • Seaboard FCU celebrated two staff members’ anniversaries. Erika was recognized for nine years with the Accounting Department and Stacie was acknowledged for two years with the Lending Department. Congratulations!
  • A peanut butter and jelly drive began at Sebasticook Valley FCU to support snack pack programs at local schools. This helped the schools provide healthy, nutritious meals during  winter vacation.
  • In partnership with Aroostook County Action Program Inc. (ACAP), The County FCU helped the community with free tax preparation.
  • Town & Country FCU recently donated $2,500 to the Foundation for Portland Public Schools in support of their Family Crisis Program, an initiative that helps students and their families in Portland Public Schools through challenging times.
  • The South Portland branch of Trademark FCU began collecting items needed at local women’s shelters.
  • TruChoice FCU tallied the purchases made with TruHero credit cards in 2022 and donated $7,016 to the McAuley Residence at Northern Light Mercy Hospital. This is their largest donation to the program to date and will help many women and children.
  • University CU awarded their UCU Star Award to Shawn MacDonald. This award is presented quarterly to an employee that has gone above and beyond in their job, providing exceptional service to members, employees, and vendors.
  • Winthrop Area FCU celebrated its Loan Supervisor’s birthday with a chili lunch. We hope you had a great day, Terri!
