December 25 is quickly approaching and the Campaign for Ending Hunger’s Holiday Meals for Mainers initiative is going strong. This year-end fundraising push raises awareness about food insecurity in our state and funds to support local hunger relief organizations.
While our League and Maine’s credit unions work year-round to promote the Campaign for Ending Hunger, our efforts are especially meaningful around the holidays when budgets are tighter, days are colder, and people of all ages are struggling due to limited resources.
If you are looking for reasons to support our Holiday Meals for Mainers initiative or other fundraising activities the Campaign coordinates throughout the year, consider these facts from Feeding America:
- More than 34 million people, including 9 million children, in the United States are food insecure. This means they lack consistent access to enough food for every person in their household to live an active, healthy life.
- Every community in the country is home to families who face hunger, but rural communities are especially hard hit by hunger.
- Many households that experience food insecurity do not qualify for federal nutrition programs and visit their local food banks and other food programs for extra support.
- Millions of people in America are just one job loss, missed paycheck, or medical emergency away from hunger.
Our League has created resources to help your credit union promote this effort. Visit our website to download social media graphics, sample messaging guides, posters, and more.
There are nine days left to donate to this important initiative. If you have not done so already, please consider providing an online donation to the Campaign at campaignforendinghunger.org/donate.
