(From Mainebiz) – Throughout Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, Scarborough-based Town & Country Federal Credit Union is running ads online and local television channels reminding Mainers to get screened for all cancers.
The $20,000 “Check ME” campaign, written and voiced by the credit union, includes a $10,000 ad buy paid for by the credit union, Maine’s second-largest with 40,000 members, and an additional $10,000 in spots at no charge, according to Jon Paradise, Town & Country FCU’s Senior Vice President of Marketing, Communications and Community Outreach.
He said that Town & Country FCU is also making a financial donation to Maine Cancer Foundation, a Falmouth-based nonprofit dedicated to reducing cancer incidence and mortality rates in Maine. According to the organization, at least one third of cancer deaths can be avoided with early detection.
“Early detection of many types of cancer is critical to positive outcomes, but we recognize that COVID has caused many people to delay or postpone regular checks for not only breast cancer but for many other types of cancer, too,’ said David Libby, Town & Country FCU’s President and CEO.
“While Town & Country is, of course, focused on financial wellness, we also understand the role that overall wellness has a direct impact on people’s lives including finances. Our ‘Check ME’ campaign is designed to build awareness and encourage people to get regular cancer checks. We believe that increased awareness of regular cancer screenings can save lives and have a positive impact on people in our community.”
The credit union is a longtime supporter of Maine Cancer Foundation as a major sponsor of its signature Tri For A Cure fundraiser as well as Mary’s Walk. Held every March, Mary’s Walk is a fundraiser in honor of Mary Kerry Libby, a member of the Saco-Biddeford community who died from Burkitt’s Lymphoma.
“Ultimately, we hope that we will see an increase in cancer checks and help grow support for Maine Cancer Foundation,” added Libby.
Town & Country FCU, which has close to 100 employees, has $500 million in assets and 40,000 members in Cumberland and York counties. In 2017, it began offering employees paid time off to get a colonoscopy and has since expanded that benefit to all cancer screenings, including breast, lung, prostrate, skin, and throat.
“Our ‘Check ME’ initiative is a continuation of our support for early detection efforts, and we look forward to building on it long after this month is over,” Libby said.
