Because Maine’s credit unions face many of the same challenges as other employers in the state, the League carefully monitors for legislation that could impact the employee/employer relationship. One bill that we have been watching closely, LD 553, An Act To End At-will Employment, is garnering attention from the business community.
Organizations like the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce, NFIB, and others have publicly expressed their opposition to the bill, which was recently endorsed by the Legislature’s Labor and Housing Committee with a vote along party lines. LD 553 now heads to the full Legislature for consideration, where pressure is mounting from the business community to stop the proposal.
“One of the unquestionable strengths of Maine’s credit unions is maintaining our strong advocacy reputation,” said Robert Caverly, League Vice President of Governmental Affairs. “Sometimes the Governmental Affairs team has tough decisions to make regarding the proper level of advocacy on certain bills. LD 553 is one example. We are watching all the employment related bills closely and will engage when it is determined that adding the League’s voice will make a positive impact.”
