CU News & Events – September Highlights


Credit unions spent the last few weeks of summer giving back to their communities, celebrating employees or Best Places to Work achievements, and of course, helping their members. Here is a brief snapshot of some of the activities credit unions participated in during the month of September.

  • Acadia FCU hosted its annual employee picnic virtually this year. All employees were given a $30 Hannaford gift card to help them host their own, socially distanced barbecues at home.
  • Atlantic FCU launched its fresh new website on September 17.
  • On September 18, Bangor Federal celebrated Monty Moose Day by giving their Monty Moose Club members double “moose bucks” for making a deposit to their account.
  • Brewer FCU partnered with Whitmore Contracting to host a disc golf tournament to benefit the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger on September 26.
  • Employees of Capital Area FCU raised over $1,000 by virtually participating in the Walk for Hope to benefit the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care.
  • To support the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger, Casco FCU held a September calendar raffle to raise money to fight hunger.
  • Central Maine FCU celebrated the end of summer by posting a throwback of its newsletter from 1988.
  • Changing Seasons FCU, Infinity FCU, and University CU supported the 27th Paws on Parade, an event which raised $26,900 for animal welfare in the Bangor region. Our four-legged friends appreciate their support.
  • Community CU’s Kirstyn Birbeck and Kayleigh Ogden were recognized as 40 Under 40 honorees by Uplift LA. Congratulations, Kirstyn and Kayleigh!
  • Connected CU is supporting the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger with a festive fall raffle! If you didn’t purchase your raffle ticket last month, you have until October 23 to buy a chance to win!
  • cPort CU served as an event sponsor of the Portland Trails to Prevail Virtual 10K, which took place during the week of September 20.
  • Cumberland County FCU celebrated 15 years of service at its Portland branch by giving away $5 gift cards to Portland House of Pizza.
  • Dirigo FCU’s Melissa Sproul was recognized as 40 Under 40 honoree by Uplift LA. Congratulations, Melissa!
  • Downeast CU celebrated several anniversaries this month! Thank you to Bette T. and Joanne C. in Calais; Melinda B., and Kristie L. in Baileyville; Logan R. and Arielle H. in Machias; and Jenny M. and Michele D. at Downeast CU’s Topsham branch.
  • Evergreen CU partnered with the Portland Sea Dogs to help strike out childhood cancer and provided funds to the Maine Children’s Cancer Program.
  • Five County CU, Lisbon Community FCU, and Lewiston Municipal FCU announced their plans to support small businesses in their communities this holiday season. These credit unions will be purchasing gift cards from local business to raffle off at the annual FEZtival of Trees display at the Kora Shrine Temple in Lewiston.
  • Gardiner FCU delivered two dozen backpacks and bags stuffed with school supplies for five area elementary schools and the Boys & Girls Club of the Kennebec Valley.
  • KSW FCU was a proud sponsor of the Belfast Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual golf tournament on September 11.
  • KV FCU shared tips for practicing financial self-care on its Facebook page to help their members better approach their personal finances.
  • While International Credit Union Day is still a couple of weeks away, Lincoln Maine FCU has already started its promotion of this special day. The credit union will be offering perks and prizes to members to celebrate the annual occasion later this month.
  • Maine Family FCU held its annual meeting on September 15.
  • Maine Harvest FCU closed on their first land loan with Avena Botanicals of Rockport—an exciting development for Maine’s newest credit union!
  • Linda Dulac, Maine Highlands FCU‘s Board Chair, was presented with the 2020 Alexander Ferguson Award for outstanding credit union volunteer. Congratulations, Linda!
  • Maine Savings FCU celebrated the Kentucky Derby in style. Employees dressed up to commemorate the annual race.
  • Maine State CU held its annual Waterville Shred-It Day on September 25.
  • Thank you to Janet from Midcoast FCU’s Bath branch for volunteering with the Maine American Legion at its yard sale, bake sale, and raffle to raise money for suicide prevention programs for veterans.
  • Monmouth FCU helped Monmouth Community Players by sponsoring their fall show, Tales from Spoon River.
  • New Dimensions FCU hosted an online webinar to teach members how to protect themselves from fraudsters.
  • NorState FCU provided staff, educators, and bus drivers at Ashland District Schools with muffins to thank them for their dedication to their students.
  • Northeast CU recognized selfless kids in their communities through its third annual “Nice Catch – Celebrating Kind Kids” initiative.
  • OTIS FCU helped Rangeley Lakes Regional School start the school year off safely. The credit union provided the school with several boxes of hand sanitizer for staff and students.
  • Oxford FCU helped Foothills Foodworks provide 120 free meals to community members in Sumner.
  • Penobscot FCU announced it will be partnering with two Hannaford Supermarkets in October to promote the sale of the Hannaford Fight Hunger bag. Hannaford will donate $1 to the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger for every Fight Hunger shopping bag sold at its 383 Wilson Street location in Brewer and at its 77 Western Avenue location in Hampden.
  • Congratulations to Nancy G, PeoplesChoice CU’s Shout Out Award Winner for September! Nancy’s colleagues nominated her because she is always available to help staff and members.
  • Sabattus Regional CU launched its new youth Super Saver mascots, Penny, Goldie, Richie, and Cash.
  • Because the annual Pumpkin Harvest Festival isn’t happening this year, Saco Valley CU came up with a creative way to celebrate fall in its community. The credit union announced it will be providing businesses, organizations, and schools with scarecrows to decorate and display on Main Street in Saco in October.
  • To stay in touch with members, Seaboard FCU launched an informative news page on its website.
  • The County FCU celebrated National Coffee Day by serving free donuts and coffee to members.
  • Town & Country FCU launched its “Local Helping Local” initiative, providing $50 gift cards to several educators to subsidize their back to school expenses.
  • Trademark FCU gave away $100 to four members who used the credit union’s new ITM.
  • TruChoice FCU came together and raised $6,649 by walking in the virtual 2020 Maine Children’s Cancer Program.
  • Happy Birthday to Tammy Beland and Andrea Michaud of Winthrop Area FCU! Andrea is a collections supervisor and Tammy is a loan officer.
  • Thank you to Acadia FCU, Atlantic FCU, Capital Area FCU, Casco FCU, Cumberland County FCU, Dirigo FCU, Gardiner FCU, Katahdin FCU, KV FCU, Maine State CU, Midcoast FCU, Monmouth FCU, New Dimensions FCU, OTIS FCU, Oxford FCU, The County FCU, Tricorp FCU, and University CU. These credit unions served as sponsors of the League’s Virtual Campaign for Ending Hunger Golf Tournament, which took place last month.
