Maine Highlands FCU Makes Significant Donation to Support Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department

Maine Highlands FCU, has donated funds to Piscataquis County for the purchase of the former Key Bank building in Guilford. The building will be maintained as a permanent law enforcement center for the patrol division of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Office.

“Maine Highlands FCU has quietly donated hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years to various non-profit organizations in our local communities,” said Rhonda Taylor, CEO at Maine Highlands FCU. “This will be, by far, our largest donation to date.”

The decision to donate $145,000 was unanimously agreed upon by the credit union’s Board of Directors because of the benefit it would bring to all residents of Piscataquis County.

The current Sheriff’s Department is housed in the same building as the Piscataquis County Jail and space has become limited according to Piscataquis County Sheriff, Bob Young.

“This generous donation will allow our employees the room they need to work more efficiently,” said Young.

“In this time of turmoil, we wanted to show our support for law enforcement,” said Taylor. “The Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department was there for us when the Guilford branch of Maine Highlands FCU was robbed at gunpoint. The compassion shown to the employees after that incident has not been forgotten. Officers drove through the parking lot every day for months and stopped to visit the office just to make sure that employees were doing okay. And community members were right there for the employees as well, some even bringing goodies with them. The support of the Sheriff’s Office continues to this day. Whenever employees have had the need to call or an alarm goes off, an officer is always available to help.”
