May was a busy month for credit unions across Maine. Between the League’s Annual Convention, various philanthropic efforts, and a number of fun and exciting announcements, last month brought much more than May flowers! Here is a look at what credit unions were up to in May:

  • Dave Desjardins, President/CEO of Acadia FCU, was presented the League President’s ‘Outstanding League Volunteer’ award at the Maine Credit Union League’s 81st Annual Meeting & Convention.
  • Atlantic FCU helped members with their spring cleaning by offering up free document shredding throughout the month of May.
  • Brewer FCU celebrated their Member Appreciation Day on May 24 with cookouts at both branches. Donations also were accepted in support of the Campaign for Ending Hunger.
  • Food donations were collected at Casco FCU throughout the month. All goods collected were donated to the Standish Food Pantry on May 28.
  • Central Maine FCU made a $2,000 donation to the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society on May 16.
  • Changing Seasons FCU held a canned food drive throughout the month of May to benefit the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter.
  • In observance of Memorial Day, Community CU marched in Auburn’s Sesquicentennial Parade on May 27.
  • Connected CU was the host of May’s Business After Hours, where local small businesses came together for an evening of networking and food.
  • Earnie the Starfish, cPort CU’s mascot, celebrated Slugger’s birthday at a Portland Sea Dogs game at Hadlock Field on May 5.
  • Dirigo FCU employees learned some new skills at a series of self-defense classes taught at CMBJJ in Lewiston last month.
  • Mason Pottle, Chairman of the Board for Downeast CU, received the ‘Alex Ferguson Award for Outstanding Credit Union Volunteer’ at the Maine Credit Union League’s 81st Annual Meeting & Convention.
  • Evergreen CU donated their used computer equipment to the Westbrook Regional Vocational Center on May 30. The school offers 16 different programs, including Automotive Technology, Computer Science and Repair, Medical Occupations, and more.
  • Through May 24, Gardiner FCU accepted donations for their Yard Sale to Benefit Ending Hunger. The actual sale took place on June 1.
  • Infinity FCU led a financial education class on May 14 with In Her Presence, a local organization founded and led by immigrant women living in Maine.
  • KSW FCU’s CEO/President visited Winslow Community FCU on May 22 to test their disaster plan. In the event that KSW is not accessible to members due to a disaster, KSW will be able to operate at WCFCU.
  • May was the first full month of operation for KV FCU’s new Waterville branch.
  • Lisbon Community FCU raised a total of $5,745 for Ending Hunger last month with their 2nd Annual Cash Calendar. 776 calendars were sold for $7,745 and cash prizes totaling $2,000 were given out.
  • The Maine Savings (FCU) Pavilion enjoyed its first concert over Memorial Day weekend.
  • Maine State CU was a proud sponsor of the Miles for Mills 5K event on May 27. In addition to being a sponsor, Maine State CU donated an additional $3,400 that employees raised earlier in the month to the Travis Mills Foundation.
  • New Dimensions FCU held a drawing for all the teachers who invited the CU into their classrooms to help with financial education in the past year. The winner, a third grade teacher at George J. Mitchell School in Waterville, won a $200 Staples gift card.
  • NorState FCU donated a total of $21,424.31 to area food pantries at their 78th Annual Membership Meeting on May 23.
  • On May 25, Otis FCU raised $635.77 during their Annual Plant Sale for Ending Hunger.
  • Oxford FCU staff rocked through the River Valley with Monty Moose, Pat the Patriot, and a New England Patriots cheerleader at a parade in Rumford on May 31.
  • Steve Baillargeon, CEO at Penobscot County FCU, was awarded with the ‘James M. Gratto Outstanding CEO’ award at the 81st Annual Maine Credit Union League Convention.
  • Sabattus Regional CU fired up the grill in front of their branch on May 10, offering up hot dogs and other delicious snacks to members in celebration of their Member Appreciation Day.
  • Erika Grass, Johanna Dorr, and Chad Desjardins from Seaboard FCU were all honored by Bucksport High School’s Jobs for Maine’s Graduates program on May 28, with the CU receiving the Business Partner Award.
  • The County FCU’s, Dan Bagley received the Diane L. Oceretko ‘People Helping People’ award at the 81st Annual Maine Credit Union League Convention.
  • Town & Country FCU donated $2,800 to the Southern Maine Agency on Aging’s Meals on Wheels program on May 7.
  • Trademark FCU announced some exciting news on May 23: The Portland Sea Dogs will be changing their name to the Maine Whoopie Pies for one day and Trademark FCU will be the main sponsor of the game.
  • TruChoice FCU’s, Ann Marie Lane received the Jeannette G. Morin ‘Outstanding Credit Union Employee’ award at the Maine Credit Union League’s 81st Annual Meeting & Convention
  • University CU’s college branches provided snacks throughout finals week to help students power through their exams.
  • Winthrop Area FCU had a teambuilding day on May 18, where they had to work together to find their way out of an escape room. After a successful escape, the team celebrated by snacking on some victory fudge!
  • Employees at Winslow FCU celebrated National Tiara Day on May 24 as a fun way to kick off the long Memorial Day weekend.
