Maine Savings FCU Hosts Visit From Congressman Poliquin

On Monday, November 23, Maine Savings FCU's Old Town branch hosted Congressman Bruce Poliquin for a visit with staff and members.  The visit marked the 9th visit by Congressman Poliquin to a credit union in the past three months.  During the visit, Congressman Poliquin listened to feedback from John Reed, President/CEO of the CU, and others on a variety of issues including support to raise the cap on credit union member business lending, mortgage regulations and other regulatory concerns.  "Congressman Poliquin has been enthusiastic about visiting credit unions, and he recognizes the important role that credit unions have in their community.  Your League works with his staff works on a regular basis to coordinate opportunities for him to visit credit unions throughout the Second District," stated your League's President John Murphy.

John Reed said Congressman Poliquin took a lot of notes while he was talking with our staff, and seems genuinely concerned about what he can do to help.  Reed added, "We spent a significant amount of time during his visit discussing in detail why MBL is a priority of ours.  We went into detail of why it's important and how it could help our members and small business owners in our communities.  It helped that we have several former bank employees working for us, and they could reiterate that the focus of many banks is not on small business lending.  We also discussed being buried in regulation, what it is costing us, the consumer and how difficult it is making life."

Congressman Poliquin called the visit an opportunity to "continue to engage with members and leaders of Maine's credit union community."  Your League's Murphy said that your League will "continue to discuss support for the legislation in the House to raise the cap on credit union member business lending with Congressman Poliquin, and other issues of importance and relevance to the ability of Maine's credit unions to serve the state's nearly 661,000 credit union members."
