In conjunction with your League's Management Roundable, your League hosted a Fundraising Reception for Maine's first member of the House Financial Services Committee in nearly 50 years, Congressman Bruce Poliquin, and the solid turnout and praise from all attendees demonstrated the strong bond that has formed in less than a year between Maine's credit unions and the Congressman. According to your League, the Reception was a success in not only raising nearly $15,000 for the Congressman but also providing an opportunity for the Congressman and credit unions to discuss important issues.
In introducing Congressman Poliquin, who is a proud member of Midcoast FCU, your League's President John Murphy praised the Congressman for his "outspoken support of wanting to help reduce the number of unnecessary regulations on credit unions, and for making it a priority to visit multiple credit unions during the recent August recess. Congressman Poliquin has made it clear that he wants to help credit unions, and appreciates the value and role that credit unions have in communities across Maine. He and his staff have taken numerous media opportunities to praise credit unions in Maine, and his desire to help create a more favorable regulatory environment for credit unions."
Congressman Poliquin was equally as complimentary of credit unions in his remarks. "I advocated hard to be on the House Financial Services Committee because of my background, and I understand the difficulties and challenges that exist in the financial services marketplace. Traveling around to credit unions in the past couple of months, I have seen and heard first hand the great work that you do, and how happy your members are with their credit union relationship. As a member myself, I, too, value the relationship I have with my credit union. Let me make it clear to you - I will continue to work tirelessly to help create a better environment for credit unions to better serve their members, an environment where doing the right thing is encouraged and not discouraged by regulations that don't make sense. Keep up the great work you do serving your members."
Scott Chretien, President/CEO of York County FCU and Chair of your League's Political Involvement Committee, said that Congressman Poliquin's position on the House Financial Services Committee can make a difference. "It was nice to hear him reiterate his desire to help us, and his appreciation for the importance of what credit unions do for our members. He really takes the time to listen to our issues, and wants to help. It's nice to see the relationship between Congressman Poliquin and credit union so strong already since he just took office in January."
