League Advocacy In Augusta Active On Multiple Bills

On the heels of one of the largest attended Maine CU Day's at the State House in Augusta, your League continues to have a strong presence in Augusta as the pace of the legislative session picks up. While many of the foreclosure bills that your League is actively involved in are still awaiting public hearings (including an amendment that would streamline the foreclosure process for Maine CUs and their members), your League, in the last few weeks, has helped to craft an amendment that successfully exempted Maine CUs with in-school branches from an information privacy bill, successfully testified on a right-to-cure bill and worked with AARP to testify in support of setting reasonable fees for credit reports provided by credit bureaus. At present, we are monitoring close to 50 bills this session already. All of our positions have prevailed in Committee, so far.

"The foreclosure bills are receiving a great deal of our attention. We have committed substantial resources, and are engaged with legislators on bills that seek to make changes and modifications to the foreclosure process including several that would provide positive changes sought by Maine credit unions.  Our advocacy efforts are busier than ever on this and other credit union issues in Augusta," remarked John Murphy, President of your League, adding, "The timing of Credit Union Day enabled us to lay the groundwork on some of these issues and priorities with many legislators who heard it directly from their local credit unions. The coming weeks should remain active on multiple issues."

Elise Baldacci, your League's Director of Governmental Affairs, said your League's Legislative Team "anticipates that the foreclosure bills will be scheduled and heard soon. While grassroots could play a role in the outcome of several of these bills, we will wait to see how the process unfolds before determining what steps we may need to take."
