On Wednesday, February 4, your League's Governmental Affairs Committee held its first meeting of the new Legislative Session via Conference Call. The primary purpose of the meeting was to discuss several bills of significant interest to your League and Maine credit unions that are expected to be printed and up for public hearings in the next few weeks.
Four bills on foreclosure generated the bulk of the discussion on the call, with your League seeking feedback from the Committee on the bills as it develops a strategy on which bills are a priority for credit unions in terms of your League's support and resources. "Several of the bills include changes to issues we discussed with the Attorney General last year when she held meetings with interested parties on foreclosure. Unfortunately, these suggestions were not included in her final report, and did not get considered for legislation last session. We believe several of these bills contain changes to the foreclosure process that will be helpful to credit unions but we are still finalizing our position and role on each of the bills," remarked your League's President John Murphy.
The Committee has been asked to submit comments and outline bills by priority to your League by the end of this week. "After reviewing comments and discussing priorities, your League will be meeting with its Legislative Team and Legislative Counsel, Ben Marcus, to finalize our next steps and prepare to work with legislators on those bills that are most important to our credit unions," added Murphy.
