Each year, Maine’s credit union community celebrates the individuals who embody the cooperative spirit, leadership, and commitment to service that define the credit union movement. Through its annual awards program, the Maine Credit Union League recognizes professionals whose dedication strengthens their organizations, enriches their communities, and advances the mission of helping people achieve financial well-being.
Among these honors is the John G. Murphy Rising Star Award, named for former Maine Credit Union League and Synergent President & CEO John G. Murphy, whose more than 40 years of service left a lasting impact on Maine’s credit union system. Established to recognize emerging professionals whose leadership, passion, and contributions are already making a difference early in their careers, the award celebrates those who represent the future of the movement. This year, we proudly recognize Ree Anna Bridges, Community Engagement Manager at University CU (UCU), as the deserving recipient of this distinguished honor.
When UCU expanded into Washington County in 2023, opening its first location in Machias on the campus of the University of Maine at Machias (UMM), the credit union wasn’t just entering a new market—it was welcoming a leader whose passion for community, education, and service would quickly make a lasting impact. The team at UCU was thrilled to nominate Bridges for this award, recognizing her exceptional leadership, professional growth, and unwavering commitment to the credit union philosophy of People Helping People.
Bridges joined UCU in September 2023, bringing with her a diverse background rooted in education, workforce development, business support, and Maine’s fishing industry. Prior to joining the credit union, she spent seven years with Jobs for Maine’s Graduates (JMG), including four years serving students at Machias Memorial High School. Her career also includes more than a decade as an educator and numerous roles supporting businesses throughout coastal Maine.
From the beginning, Bridges embraced the challenge of helping establish UCU’s presence in a brand-new market. Within her first month of training, she played a key role in preparing for the opening of the Machias branch and has since become the primary face of UCU in the region. As Community Engagement Manager, she independently staffs the branch while simultaneously building awareness, trust, and meaningful relationships throughout Washington County.
Her impact was immediate and far-reaching.
Within her first six months at UCU, Bridges earned her Certified Credit Union Financial Counselor (CCUFC) designation, equipping her to provide financial education and coaching to individuals, students, families, and community organizations. She has delivered financial literacy programming in schools, workforce development settings, military organizations, and one-on-one counseling sessions, helping people build confidence and achieve greater financial well-being.
Bridges has also been instrumental in creating strong partnerships across the region. On the UMM campus, she has developed trusted relationships with campus leadership, admissions teams, and financial aid professionals. In the broader community, she has collaborated with organizations such as Future Families Downeast, helping provide financial literacy education to participants pursuing higher education and economic mobility.
Her leadership extends well beyond her day-to-day responsibilities. Bridges serves as Vice Chairperson of the Northeastern Workforce Development Board’s Executive Committee, where she helps shape strategies that connect education, workforce development, and economic opportunity across the region.
Within UCU, she has become a mentor to her colleagues. After earning her CCUFC certification, she began sharing her expertise with fellow Community Engagement Managers, inviting peers to shadow her work and providing self-created presentations and resources designed to strengthen the entire team’s impact.
What makes Bridges especially deserving of this recognition is her authentic commitment to people. Former students continue to seek her out on campus and throughout the community, a testament to the trust she builds and the lasting relationships she creates. Whether she is coaching a member through a financial challenge, supporting a student, or connecting community partners with resources, she consistently places people at the center of her work.
Her professional growth has been equally impressive. In less than three years within a completely new industry, Bridges has mastered branch operations, earned a nationally recognized certification, and established herself as a trusted representative of UCU throughout Washington County. She is currently completing a Master of Arts in Law with a Business Concentration from Regent University, further enhancing her expertise in business, compliance, and strategic leadership.

Most recently, Bridges was selected as a 2026 Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) Crasher, a prestigious honor that recognizes emerging leaders within the credit union movement and provides opportunities to engage in national advocacy and industry advancement.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Bridges remains deeply committed to community service. She has served on the Machias Bay Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; volunteers as a Make-A-Wish Wish Granter; earned a micro-credential in volunteer management from UMM; and actively supports local food initiatives, sustainability efforts, community festivals, and regional collaboration networks.
In every role she undertakes, Bridges demonstrates vision, compassion, and an unwavering dedication to helping others succeed. Her work has strengthened UCU’s presence in Washington County, expanded access to financial education, and created meaningful opportunities for countless individuals and families.
The John G. Murphy Rising Star Award recognizes emerging leaders who embody the values and future of the credit union movement. Bridges exemplifies those qualities through her leadership, service, and commitment to building stronger communities.
