Several Ways to Combat Hunger in Maine During the Month of June

Ending hunger in our state is an initiative all Maine credit unions are behind. This June, there are ample opportunities to support this critical issue. Your credit union can participate and promote the $100,000 Ending Hunger Challenge, consider supporting Full Plates Full Potential’s summer meal grant program, and purchase a Fight Hunger Bag at Hannaford Supermarket’s Augusta and Brewer locations.

Ending Hunger Challenge

Week one of our monthlong Challenge is done! It has been heartwarming to see so many credit unions promoting the Challenge on social media and coordinating their own fundraisers at their branches. Every day, donations have been coming in—collectively getting us closer to our $100,000 goal! New names are continuously being added to our Challenge Contributors page. Thank you to everyone who has made a donation. If you would like to get your credit union’s logo added to our page, there’s still plenty of time to give!

Don’t forget, the League has created several resources to help you promote the Challenge with your members, volunteers, employees, and community partners. Visit our website to access these materials. Additionally, the League/Synergent will provide the three credit unions that raise the most money during the Challenge with a $500 bonus that they can use to support a hunger-relief effort in their communities. Credit union winners will be determined in the following asset sizes:

  • Less than $50 million
  • $50 – $250 million
  • $250 million – $1 billion

Feeding Kids During the Summer

With the school year coming to an end, many families across our state will face challenges feeding their children during summer vacation. This can be an extremely difficult time of year, but summer meal programs help fill the gaps.

As they have done in the past, Full Plates Full Potential has shared with our League the summer meal grant requests they received from school departments and hunger-relief organizations across Maine. If your chapter or credit union has Ending Hunger dollars that you would like to put toward helping Full Plates fulfill or partially fulfill a summer grant request, please contact Jen Burke at jburke@mainecul.org. before close of business on June 16. Hannaford Fight Hunger Bags

The Campaign for Ending Hunger has been selected to receive a $1 donation for every $2.50 Fight Hunger Bag sold at Hannaford Supermarket’s Augusta location at 29 Whitten Road and its Brewer location at 383 Wilson Street. This special fundraiser will run June 1 – June 30. Buying a bag is a simple and environmentally friendly way to support the Campaign throughout the month of June.
