The League will host a virtual Town Hall on October 14 from 1:00 – 2:00 pm to discuss the financial challenges faced by children and young adults living in Maine’s foster care system.
Midcoast FCU, in collaboration with the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), Jobs for Maine Graduates (JMG) – Opportunity Passport, and the Maine Youth Transition Collaborative, is working to support youth in foster care by helping them open individual share and draft accounts, as well as providing financial education and guidance.
This initiative underscores the challenges these young people face in opening accounts without an adult joint owner and highlights the critical need for financial education within this demographic.
Participants will gain an understanding of the specific needs in Maine, how the Opportunity Passport program operates, and the opportunities available to support these efforts.
Christina Carter, EVP at Midcoast FCU, and Tena Wallace, VP of Community Engagement at Midcoast FCU, will help facilitate this timely discussion with guest speakers Ahmen Cabrel and Dulcey Laberge. Cabrel provides leadership for the Youth and Community Engagement team at the Catherine Cutler Institute, and Laberge serves as the Youth Transition Program Manager within the Office of Child and Family Services at Maine DHHS.
