The holidays are quickly approaching, and with them comes an annual day to focus on generosity and giving back to our communities. Giving Tuesday is taking place on Tuesday, December 2 this year—perfectly timed amidst the season of giving. While many Mainers will be focused on celebrating over big holiday feasts with gathered loved ones, far too many will be wondering where their next meal will come from.
This Giving Tuesday, Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger is calling for your help. Together, in one single day, we hope to raise enough money to provide 3,500 meals to our hungry neighbors in need in honor of the Campaign’s 35th anniversary year. If every credit union in Maine donated $35, the Campaign would achieve this goal!
While Maine’s credit unions are dedicated to the fight against food insecurity year-round, the need is especially high right now. During the cold winter months when heating expenses rise—tightening household budgets all across Maine—individuals and families who already struggle to find enough funds to provide healthy and nutritious meals will turn to community supports for assistance. Given the government shutdown, higher costs of living, and other economical and systemic obstacles, the demand for food pantry goods is climbing rapidly.
Hunger relief organizations need our help to continue meeting the needs of Maine communities. By joining together in unison on this day of giving, we demonstrate the power of our movement and our shared People Helping People philosophy. We’ve proven time and time again what we accomplish when we join forces, and our League hopes this Giving Tuesday will be no different.
