CU News & Events – October Edition


October was a busy and engaging month for our credit unions. Between fall festivities, Halloween, and International Credit Union Day, there was a flurry of community-based activities and support. When it comes to People Helping People, Maine credit unions never disappoint. Here is a brief snapshot of what some of our credit unions were up to last month:

  • Acadia FCU held its Member Appreciation Week. Staff encouraged members to stop in for snacks, Acadia swag, and a chance to win a $25 Visa gift card.
  • Atlantic FCU supported Make-A-Wish Maine’s Wish Night on October 29.
  • Bangor FCU opened its new Ellsworth branch.
  • Brewer FCU held a drawing for their members on International Credit Union Day and gave away four $25 gift cards.
  • Capital Area FCU thrived at their Walk for Hope, surpassing their fundraising goal. The credit union raised $1,340 to fight cancer.
  • Casco FCU celebrated the spooky season by holding their annual branch costume contest.
  • Central Maine FCU announced it will be collaborating with four other local credit unions for the FEZtival of Trees at the Kora Temple: Five County CU, Lisbon Community FCU, Sabattus Regional CU, and Community CU.
  • Changing Seasons FCU handed out treats to their members through the drive-thru in celebration of International Credit Union Day.
  • Community CU sent volunteers to help Trinity Jubilee Center clean up and prepare for the winter weather.
  • Connected CU brought free Subway sandwich lunches to the Augusta Teen Center on October 29.
  • The Maine Children’s Alliance awarded cPort CU a 2021 Giraffe Award for their continuous efforts to provide financial assistance and opportunities to all Mainers. Congratulations, cPort!
  • Cumberland County FCU employee Alex Raynor won the 2021 Spirit of Excellence Award from the Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club of Yarmouth. Congratulations, Alex!
  • On October 17, Dirigo FCU hosted their Bowl for Ending Hunger Fundraiser at Just-In-Time Recreation. Donations reached $1,700.
  • Members of the Downeast CU team in Richmond and Topsham participated in local Trunk-or-Treat events on October 31.
  • Eastmill FCU shared tips with their members for avoiding scams and fraud in their fall newsletter.
  • Evergreen CU employees spent time volunteering at the South Portland Food Pantry, Portland Trails, and the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland. Thank you for serving your community!
  • Five County CU announced that it has partnered with the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation to make it a brighter holiday season for those in need. The credit union has toy drop-boxes at various locations and is also accepting cash donations.
  • Franklin-Somerset FCU held their Member Appreciation Day on October 21 during International Credit Union Day. The staff had giveaways for members throughout the day.
  • Gardiner FCU held a gift basket raffle and donated over $1,100 in proceeds to the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care.
  • Throughout the month of October, Infinity CU continued their Random Acts of Kindness by surprising members in the community.
  • Katahdin FCU held a coloring contest for kids, with two winners from three different age groups. The kids’ artwork was displayed in Katahdin FCU’s lobby.
  • KSW FCU hosted a free member celebration for International Credit Union Day with Rita’s Catering and 107.9 The Mix.
  • KV FCU announced it will be donating $4,000 to a hunger relief organization in central Maine that their members nominate through the credit union’s Facebook page. The credit union accepted nominations through October 31 and will be announcing the winning organization soon!
  • International Credit Union Day at Lincoln Maine FCU went virtual with online games between employees and members. Players won various prizes, including Blink minis, a Geeni security camera, a JBL speaker, LED strip lights, a 15-piece Farberware cookware set, and a Nintendo Switch console.
  • On October 1 and 2, Lisbon Community FCU collected non-perishable food, baked goods, cans, bottles, and cash donations to benefit LACO Food Pantry.
  • Maine Highlands FCU shared the success of their Ending Hunger Golf Tournament and Ending Hunger Yard Sale in their fall newsletter. Together, they raised over $1,800 to combat hunger in their community.
  • Maine Savings FCU announced that Bangor’s Waterfront Pavilion will become the Maine Savings Amphitheater in June 2022. Venue upgrades are to come with this name change, including luxury suites, upgraded seating, concessions, and new permanent bathrooms.
  • Maine State CU sold and displayed Hearts for Hope in their lobbies throughout October with proceeds benefitting the Dempsey Center and the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care.
  • Midcoast FCU hosted a Bags & Brews cornhole tournament on October 14 with $1,000 in proceeds benefitting the Greater Freeport Chamber of Commerce’s Budding Entrepreneur Scholarship Fund and Freeport Community Services.
  • Milestones FCU, formerly Lewiston Municipal FCU, observed International Credit Union Day the week of October 18-22 with a raffle, giveaways, and more.
  • Monmouth FCU welcomed costumed members on Halloween for a fun trick or treat banking experience!
  • New Dimensions FCU offered tours of their new main office and giveaways to commemorate International Credit Union Day and their 65th anniversary.
  • NorState FCU welcomed Jeffrey Davenport to their family as the new Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer. Welcome, Jeffrey!
  • Northeast CU recognized employees during Employee Appreciation Week with a dress up theme for each day of the week.
  • OTIS FCU held a week-long celebration of International Credit Union Day by doing Random Acts of Kindness throughout the communities in their field of membership.
  • For every new member at Oxford FCU during the month of October, the credit union donated $10 to Safe Voices and the Cancer Resource Center of Western Maine.
  • Penobscot County FCU treated staff to decoratively iced cookies to celebrate being named one of the Best Places to Work in Maine. Congratulations to the team!
  • PeoplesChoice CU continued their efforts to sell Take a Chance to End Hunger in Maine raffle tickets to support the Campaign for Ending Hunger.
  • Sabattus Regional CU recognized International Credit Union Day with a week-long celebration consisting of food and gifts for their members.
  • Saco Valley CU shared an employee spotlight on their social media, revealing fun facts about their staff to introduce them to members.
  • Seaboard FCU shared important details about Cybersecurity Awareness Month on social media to keep their members safe.
  • Sebasticook Valley FCU thanked Supervisory Committee Chair George Lougee for his 17 years of service to the credit union and community in their newsletter. Thank you, George!
  • The County FCU brought the festive Halloween spirit into their branches with costumes, treats, and pumpkin carving.
  • Town & Country FCU asked members to vote and help a nonprofit receive $25,000 from their Better Neighbor Fund.
  • Trademark FCU dropped off donations from their 2021 School Supplies Drive at Memorial Middle School on October 25.
  • TruChoice FCU announced that they raised $7,805 for the 2021 Maine Children’s Cancer Program Walk. Congratulations to the TruChoice team!
  • University CU’s Community Engagement Managers handed out UCU swag and cheered on golfers at the Bangor Region Chamber of Commerce Chamber Challenge Golf Tournament.
  • Winthrop Area FCU observed Halloween in various costume pairings, including a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, making their members smile.
