CU News & Events – January Edition


The cold of January did not stop Maine’s credit unions from warming the hearts of their communities! From fundraisers for charity to scholarships for students choosing to continue their education, credit unions continued to find ways to wow. Our League offers a snapshot of what some of our credit unions were up to last month.

  • Acadia FCU is now offering $6,000 in scholarships to high school members of the Class of 2023.
  • On social media, Atlantic FCU shared ample “Do Better Tips” with members, informing them on a variety of topics ranging from the five factors of credit to tips for home renovations.
  • Bangor FCU warned members of the risks involved with participating in online quizzes.
  • Brewer FCU is collecting pasta and sauce as part of a food drive to help their local food cupboard, CHEFS.
  • Capital Area FCU is coordinating a cornhole tournament to benefit Special Olympics Maine.
  • Ahead of Valentine’s Day, a Fuel the Love Raffle began at Casco FCU. One winner will receive $500 worth of home heating fuel. Proceeds from the raffle will be donated to Keep ME Warm.
  • To stay on top of their finances, Central Maine FCU encouraged members to check their credit scores.
  • Changing Seasons FCU was awarded a 2nd place Louise Herring Award from the Credit Union National Association during their virtual awards ceremony. Congratulations!
  • In their winter newsletter, Coast Line CU shared helpful tips for teaching students about financial responsibility, such as knowing the difference between a want and a need.
  • The application for the 2023 Gerald R. Langelier Scholarship from Community CU opened! The deadline to apply is April 3.
  • Connected CU delivered lunch within the community throughout the month, including to the Augusta Teen Center and to the team at Midstate Machine in Winslow.
  • cPort CU announced their $25,000 donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kennebec Valley. The funds will support the building of a toddlers’ room in the Club’s new Gardiner location.
  • A new digital banking experience will be coming soon to Dirigo FCU.
  • Downeast CU wished Katie Knights a happy sixth anniversary. Katie works in the credit union’s lending department and helps members with their financing needs. Thank you for your years of service, Katie.
  • On their website, Eastmill FCU shared information with members about fraud attacks and scams to be aware of.
  • Evergreen CU named their first Auto Cash winner of the year. Congratulations to Tim G. from the Windham branch.
  • Five County CU’s Hillary Barone shared some tips to help members determine the types of items that are covered by a Health Savings Account. The tips were shared in a video posted on the credit union’s Facebook page.
  • Happy anniversary to Susan, Gardiner FCU’s Compliance Administrator. She recently celebrated eight years with the credit union. Thank you, Susan, for your hard work and for serving as the credit union’s compliance guru.
  • Great Falls FCU provided a $3,000 donation to Kaydenz Kitchen Food Pantry in Lewiston to help them provide essential food and delivery services to those in need in the community.
  • Infinity CU profiled Adam Carrier in their Employee Highlight. Adam was recently promoted to Regional Mortgage Sales Manager and has been with the credit union for 16 years. Keep up the great work, Adam!
  • Katahdin FCU is sponsoring a Super Bowl Snack Basket raffle for Ending Hunger.
  • The winter newsletter from KSW FCU outlined privacy information members should know.
  • Congratulations to KV FCU for receiving the 2022 Mayor’s Recognition of Excellence Award for their service to their community in relation to the Campaign for Ending Hunger! The award is a well-deserved honor for your team.
  • With mail fraud always lurking, Lincoln Maine FCU cautioned members against sending checks in the mail. Between the unique signature, personal information, and all the financial information, these details can be stolen and used by those with bad intentions.
  • Lisbon Community FCU shared information for their Annual Meeting ahead of the February 26 meeting date.
  • With contributions from staff and members, Maine Family FCU donated coats, nonperishables, and gift cards to The Store Next Door Project.
  • The Brewer location of Maine Savings FCU donated 278 pounds of food to the Brewer Area Food Pantry.
  • Maine State CU exhibited at the MEREDA Conference & Member Showcase.
  • Midcoast FCU encouraged members to challenge themselves by saving $25 per week until summer, which would provide them $500 of savings to kick off the sunny season.
  • Milestones FCU alerted members of upgrades to mobile and online banking coming on February 14.
  • The New Dimensions FCU scholarship is now open for graduating seniors.
  • NorState FCU sponsored the Winter Blast at the Grand Isle Community Center gymnasium on January 29.
  • On January 24, Northeast CU held a fraud prevention seminar.
  • Two new Member Specialists joined the team at OTIS FCU. Welcome, Elise and Stephanie.
  • Tax season is here. Oxford FCU shared details in their newsletter with members on where to find their OFCI tax documents so they can begin filing.
  • The Old Town branch of Penobscot County FCU hired a new branch manager, Lisa Phillips. Welcome to the credit union, Lisa.
  • Sabattus Regional CU shared that they will host their Annual Meeting on February 5.
  • Seaboard FCU reminded members to take advantage of their mobile banking offering.
  • Sebasticook Valley FCU excitedly announced that in 2023, they will be celebrating 70 years of service to their members and local communities! The credit union was formed on October 7, 1953 for the employees of the Northeast Shoe Company in Pittsfield.
  • On January 25, The County FCU brought donuts and pizza to the Caribou Fire and Police Departments.
  • Town & Country FCU donated $5,000 to the South Portland Food Cupboard.
  • To kick off the new year on the right financial foot, Trademark FCU reminded members that they can set up automatic transfers to their savings accounts each week.
  • After tallying purchases made with their TruHero credit cards in 2022, TruChoice FCU was able to donate $15,413 to the Children’s Miracle Network at The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital. This was the biggest donation to date for the program since its launch in 2009.
  • UCU announced it will be awarding eight $1,000 scholarships to Maine students at each of the seven University of Maine schools and Maine Maritime Academy.
  • Winthrop Area FCU took time out to celebrate their new Account Specialist’s birthday on January 13. Happy birthday, Victoria, and welcome to the credit union.
